Radio Scanner Group

Greetings,

I was wondering if I could be so bold as to suggest an idea for a new group on the boards.ie system.

I would be most interested in a Radio Scanner board, for the thousands of people who use radio scanners in ireland.

Any support ?

Raz

One question.... how much activity have Irish Scanners got on the web; i.e. is there enough of y'all on the web to sustain a forum?

Also, I'd be a bit iffy if there was discussion of Garda scanning... grey area and such....

I haven't really seen any radio scanner discussions, but if you get people that are interested to post on this thread then the admins might give it a looksee

it wouldn't be anything dodgy/illegal, like garda scanning (as DMC mentioned), would it? as long as it's legal, and you have the support from people that are interested, they might give it a think.

Are scanners not illegal to own, or is it only illegal to use them to listen to Garda frequencies?

It's not illigal to listen to any publically broadcast radio freq, even the ones plod transmit on. It is illigal to use the information gained from these chanells for nefarious activites or to profit from the information you obtain.

There was a paper released in an irish hackers/security mag a good few years back that had a large and current (then) list of radio freqs and who (they suspected) used them. Worth searching for if you can find it. I also remember reading a good article on using a poscag decoder to view eircell pages. Not to mention the good oul 088 days

I'd be very interested in this group too!

Is there a group of such people we could approach to discuss it with them? ie: an existing community who will populate the new forum? Cos most of the support here are just interested passersby, not hard core users (apart from yourself).

I'll sit down this weekend and go through the forum requests in general.

I don't know about the legality of scanners actually. I'm pretty sure they used to be illegal and I haven't heard of that changing. Surely the scanners yahoo group would know?

Hobbie Rules....and legality of it all....

folks, Im currently a member of scannerz@yahoogroups.com and this is the situation:

1) It is illegal to listen to any broadcast that is not intended for you or you do not have a license to listen to. i.e Gardai/Emergency services etc...

2) Also it is illegal to pass to a third party any information you may hear whilst monitoring these channels/frequencies.

3) With this in mind it doesnt leave much communications to listen to. except public broadcast messages i.e marine radio information and weather forecasts.

4) The frequencies which we are not allowed listen too, are however in the public domain which makes it legal to discuss them and to pass them on...however listening to them and programming them into your radio scanner is an offence.

5) A person with some sense knows not to divulge sensitive information they may have heard to others that are intent on commiting a criminal offence or walk up to a member of the gardai with scanner in hand boasting about it. Also group members are aware that most of the things we discuss have already occured the previous night for example and is therfore no use to the crimnallly minded.

6) We would ask in the spirit of the hobbie to keep "sensitive info" such as people names addresses personal information to yourself and not to post it....and just post in general terms discussing an incident that may have occured over the airwaves without jeopordising a persons information.

Hope this helps.

I'm not opposed to this in the slightest, and I've no interest in it. I'm also not an admin, so my opinion is just that, an opinion, not policy (just to clarify).
Based on what you've just said, I can sum up my opinion in one picture:

My 2c
