So I visit a neighbours house to pick up my little fella who's been there for the afternoon playing with his friend. His mum rings 5 minutes later to say there's oil stains on their new carpet.

So, wise folks of AH, how would you handle this situation?

Ring her back and tell her Red Wine will wash that oil stain right out.

Why do they think you're responsible for it?

Where did your young fella get oil?

How old is he? Surely it's the responsibility of the adult to supervise the kids?

    So many questions.

I was wearing shoes - this is one of those 'leave your shoes at the door' houses.

They need a darker carpet. Stains happen.

Pay her for a new carpet/cleaning the stains off professionally and take off your oily feckin shoes before you go into someones house again. Messy git.

If someone copudn't be aresed to wipe their shoes before they came in I'd be peed off as well.
OP, all you can do is emigrate.

Or give them your child in compensation.

I'm not surprised. Her neighbour has a habit of dragging oily shoes through other peoples houses.

Thing is, I got my shoes, wiped them with a tissue and they came up clean. So not guilty, your honour.

Call around and tell her you are sorry and are willing to pay for the carpet to be replaced and when she reacts all happy that you are being so mature about the whole situation roar april fool and run out the gate flapping your arms and laughing like a simpleton, oh and video it and post it on youtube, it be mighty craic to watch.
