Rooting Kindle Fire HD

Has anyone here rooted a KFHD? I've rooted 5 different android devices, and this is by far the most intimidating. There are multiple ways of doing it with many steps - miss one step, skip one step or don't get an exact response from one step and you risk permanently bricking the device.

I have a factory cable, so I can access fastboot. I just want to know if anyone here has managed to root it, and what method they used?

In case anyone searches for the process in future, I got it working myself.

I used this guide to root it, and this guide to install Google Play services (so I can access Google Play and download my regular paid-for apps and games that I have on my phone).

The only thing that caught me out was 2 step authentication on my google account (which I have enabled for security). I had to generate an application specific password on my Google Account Settings page and use that to log in.

I just played the first 5 levels of Tiny Thief and it looks great.

Custom ROMs are a whole other project, but I'm happy for now. :)

    ----

Edit: To get Gmail working, I needed to enable the account settings (otherwise an eternal "Waiting for Sync" message would appear on screen). The settings in the Gmail app were hidden until I installed and ran this app - nothing happens on screen when you run it, but you should now have access to the settings menu within Gmail. In there, find the "Sync Gmail" option to enable syncing.

Heya, I'm following the steps in the link you posted to root my Kindle Fire, but in step 8, is says to back up my data, but I can't find this option in my menu, any ideas?

Mine is a Kindle Fire 10.4.6, not the HD version if that makes a difference

I expect the steps for the KF and KFHD are different.

See here for corresponding threads about the KF:
