Diesel or Petrol

Everyone seems to be buying Diesel these days.

How many miles a year should you be doing to warrant buying diesel over petrol?.

It depends on how much more the diesel is going to cost to buy and maintain than the petrol. You need to work out (as best you can) your extra costs and subtract your projected fuel savings from that figure.

At last an intelligent answer to this question rather than randomly spouting the 12000 mile limit like most posters.

OP there's really no rule, carry out analysis as suggested above and make the decision for yourself. Bear in mind the increased resale value of diesel vs petrol, provided that climate doesn't change a large percentage of the increased cost to buy can be recuperated here when/if you sell the car.

.... I'm quite sure there has been intelligent answers to the question previously, there has no doubt been the random spouting too.

It depends on what you're going to use it for. Basically, modern diesels are not designed for constant low speed and/or gentle driving (well diesels were always meant to be for open road use and to be fair petrol engines are not meant to be driven around town all the time too, but petrols and older diesels are very tolerant of this kind of driving) you will potentially be looking at very big bills, which will more than wipe out any fuel savings you get from driving a diesel.
