Very insightful interview. He can certainly talk the talk, but in fairness he walked the walk too.
To finish 9th in the Olympic final was a great achievement, and without those cramps in the last 5 miles, a medal could have certainly be on. |

It's a radio interview, 47 minutes long and I didn't have the time to hear it all. First few minutes are very interesting. One point that Jerry made was that he would have been 35 at the Seoul Olympics (after 9th in Los Angeles) and 35 is just too old etc. He didn't mention that Carlos Lopez won gold in LA at 37!
Nevertheless, Jerry is truly a legend of Irish sport. Check out his stats. Not just that but he can be found a couple of evenings a week coaching children at one of the clubs in Dublin. |

A gentleman..
I interviewed Jerry for Irish Runner magazine at last year's Dublin Marathon expo.
He was a thoroughly impressive interviewee. What struck me most was his forthrightness and lack of ego. He was completely prepared to provide an opinion on almost any aspect of athletics, but didn't seem to need to believe that he had a monopoly on wisdom. Having a range of well-thought-out opinions, that are backed up by enormous personal experience - and at the same time being prepared to believe that you could be wrong - is an impressive combination. |

I presume this is the picture he refers to in the interview. He encompasses the pure love for running. |
