Stopped by Gardai at Airport this morning

My usual route in and out of work brings me over the airport roundabout and there was a Guard stopping cyclists just where the road forks to the roundabout and to the M1 sliproad coming form the Cloghran roundabout direction. He was by himself and very polite and asked me, and the two following cyclists behind, to stop for 30 seconds. At first I thought he was going to breathalyse me. He then asked me if I cycled this route regularly and if I noticed anything unusual about the road ahead or anything dangerous in the road ahead like surface or other things in the lead up to the roundabout. He purposefully blocked my view of the road ahead so I would be judging from memory.

I bet this has to do with the fatality that happened on this stretch a few months ago. I didn’t ask, when a Guard tell you to go on your way you do so without question, at least I do!

Anyone else got stopped?

What time was this? I had just overtaken 2 fellow Swords Leaguers (and occasional Boardsies) before taking a left at Cloghran roundabout (towards Baskin) around 7.40. Looking at their Strava records there was a stop (and Heart Rate spike) at that very point ...

Bit odd that a Garda would be doing research though, isn't it?

Yeah I was stopped there at 7.45. It's the exact bit of road that the fatality happened. To be honest that stretch of about 100m from the fork to the lights at the roundabout is fine IMO. The other side where the road works are at the start of the old airport road are a disaster.

Very interesting and I think your speculation is correct.

It might be to do with this incident

Yeah we got stopped too.
He was following up on a recent fatality, asking us questions about the stretch of road ahead, particularly leading into the main airport roundabout.

Just be aware that there are going to be road works on the section from the main roundabout south to Cloghran Cross for the next while.

Good to see them doing the leg work and including what cyclists notice.

I passed there around 8.15am that morning but they must have been gone by then.

(On a side note - the section of roadworks between Dardistown Cemetery and ALSAA (northbound) have a seperated temporary route to be shared by cyclists and pedestrians. I normally avoid it and stay on the road but was directed into it by a worker yesterday. It's awkward when catching up with a pedestrian as it's only about a metre wide and if they are wearing earphones they can't hear you approaching .)
