Great Race Galway 10k June 17

http://www.runireland.com/events/great-race-galway-10k

New race coming to the Galway calendar.

I'm not involved in the organization of this, but I know the two lads who are and they are sound guys who know their stuff about running and races (both experienced race directors for club races and also competitive runners) but they don't do the boards thing so asked me to post it up here.. :-)

I work beside the course and must have run it two hundred times or more. It's a generally flat route which quickly turns to rural roads with one steep hill in the middle and a classy start and finish on Galway race track. There's talk of prizes for the fastest last k and other fancy trimmings. Anyhow I'll be running it - couldn't miss it when it's exactly my own training route. 20 quid for aai members.

I had a little giggle to myself when I read the flyer for this yesterday. It describes the course as mostly on fast country roads. No mention of the hill (from the Tuam Road up to Parkmore roundabaout) & in fairness thats a b!tch of a hill just to drive up.

I wouldn't mind doing this as it does sound like a decent course but it's the day after Portumna so I don't know if the legs will be up to it. Hope it goes well.

I wouldn't call the course flat either :-) Might be fast though - not sure. I don't think I've ever done a time trial on it myself - mostly ran it a few times on long runs on friday evenings, etc.

Tuam road linkup hill is severe - but it's short(ish - 300m or so) so I think a lot of the rest of it is gradual downhill.

I think they will be doing a time trial on it in a week or two so we'll have a better idea then as to whether it's fast or not. It's a half lap of the race course at the start and finishes with about 3/4 of a lap at the end.

Matt (Bidwell) ran the route for a trial run last week and just noticed that he posted his thoughts on it in his blog: http://beermatt.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/great-race.html

so, in a nutshell does 'that' hill make this non pb potential or is the rest of the course fairly flat ?

Great event, great weather, great running! Noticeably warmer after that hill just after the 6k marker! Weather should have made for a few nice pics. Hopefully we'll see this race again next year.
