Hotel booked online want me to sign receipt

Yesterday I booked a room in a hotel in Italy online on booking.com. Today I got an email from the parent company of the hotel which had a pdf document containing a scan of a receipt. They ask me to sign the receipt for the deposit (though it actually has the full amount on the receipt) and send it back to them. I assume they want me to print it, sign it, scan it and then email it back? It seems a bit odd, is this normal practice?

And there's nothing about this on their FAQs or terms?

Normally you sign things when you either arrive at the hotel or when you are leaving then they bill you. Well for me anyway.
