I have just read a piece in the Irish Times today.

In the body of the article, it has claimed that the Hdip has been increased from a 1year course to a 2year course.

When does this come into effect?

"As part of the national strategy to boost literacy and numeracy, the length of the teacher-training course (B Ed) for primary teachers will increase from three to four years. The postgraduate diploma in education, formerly the H Dip, has been increased from one to two years."

Quite an interesting article. Crazy to think we have 22 colleges for education in this country. Universities wont like to lose their schools of education as they are a serious cash cow.

Personally I think there should be a 2-3 year freeze on the whole thing for 2nd level anyway. We must have about 1000-2000 teachers at this stage either unemployed or on less than 16 hours.

If you include those on less than 16 hours, I'd say the numbers are much higher.

With effect from September 2014, postgraduate programmes of initial teacher education accredited by the Teaching Council will be extended to two years full time study or 120 ECTS credits.

It matters in the sense that you might only be able to get accreditation to teach one subject.

I have a Biochemistry degree with Microbiology, French, some Chemistry and some Maths.
The Teaching Council only recognise me to teach Biology as any subject that makes up at least 30% of the 240 Credits of my degree is a biological one.

I think Maths and Chemistry make up 20 and 16% of my degree but officially IM not allowed teach them.
