Outdoor Season 2012

The Outdoor Season is on!!

With results starting to filter in from the US/Australia and with the first main domestic T&F meet (Leevale) kicking off in just over a week, it's time to start a new thread.

Interesting to hear that Alistar Cragg has made the Europeans a focus in his calendar this year, I think after his record breaking run at the weekend, he could indeed be a contender for a medal at the Europeans. I know we've said it all before, but with the focus on the Olympics for most athletes, I think this will suit Cragg. He claims he will try the double (5000m/10000m) and will aim to achieve the Olympic A standard in the 10000m to add to his 5k standard already achieved.

Cragg is doubling the 1500 and 5k tomorrow at Stanford according to his Twitter. Interesting stuff, must be back in a training phase after Carlsbad.

Fionnuala Britton going over 5k too. Cannot wait to see what she does.

Fields here, cannot spot any other Irish.

Brendan O Neill also down on the entry list for the 10k. Should be an interesting one. Saw this earlier but missed cragg and Britton only saw Brendan

Anthony Leighio is also running in the 1500m - expect a PB!! Tommy Casey, the Senior Schools 1500m champion for the last two years is also in the field. So too is Kevin Cooper from Ferrybank.

Dave Flynn is racing the steeplechase as is Tomas Cotter, who is running quite well recently.

Add in Kerry Harty in the 1500m, and we have a good Irish representation competing there this the weekend.

I think Alistar will put in a solid 1500m, but having only a 90minute recovery before the 5k will surely make it very difficult. We'll see what happens, should be interesting!

Should have spotted Leighio, saw him run at Nationals when I was home in August and thought he looked a really classy runner.

It shows I've been away too long that I have never heard of Tommy Casey!

Tomas Cotter won his 3,000m steeplechase race in 8:51.88mins. I'm not sure, but I think his previous best time was from the Nationals last year where he claimed the Irish title in 9:00.91mins so if that's correct, he has smashed his P.B. by a whopping 10 seconds! Great run by the lad.

David Flynn also with a new steeplechase P.B. coming in 11th in the A-race in 8:49.24mins, I think his previous best time was 8:52.19mins from Stanford last year. Good stuff.

Cragg 6th (i think) in 3.42.00. Decent run with the 5k to come.

I'm watching here, waiting for Fionnuala Britton coming up in a while.

Not the best race by Anthony Lieghio, 8th in his 1,500m race in 3:49.07mins. Kevin Cooper finished 7th in 3:47.93mins in his race.

Fionnuala Britton 6th in 15.29. A solid start but she would have wanted the 15.20 Olympic standard. Race won in 15.18. She did all the work from about 1km to 3km and could not go when moves were made.

Cragg 13.32 (not sure of place, winner in 13.31.51) in the 5k for a ridiculous 3.42/13.32 double in the space of 90 minutes. He was in the top 4 in a tight group with about 1200 to go when Brent Vaughn made a serious move for home. Cragg was gapped a bit but fought back.

He looks to be in the shape of his life. We will see an Irish 10k record from him in a few weeks.

The Payton Jordan Invitational at the end of the month could probably be a chance at this if he does it

Holly Knight was 16th in the 10,000m in 33:08.99mins. I think her previous best was 33:51mins so that was a massive improvement on her P.B. figures. In fact it's a qualifying time for the European Champinships in Helsinki so well done to Holly.
