Good turnout last night.

The lads did well playing against full-time professionals. Vale beat Athlone 5-0, so 3-0 is no shame at all.

If we can get 400 into Terryland to watch a District League selection play a League Two team in pre-season, the place should be jammed for the Chick game.

There will be a special 88-page souvenir programme for the Chick Deacy testimonial on Saturday, which covers Chick’s sporting career from captaining West United to the Galway District U-13 Cup in 1966, right up to winning the Lillis Cup with West in 2006 in his last competitive game.

In between there are articles on his days with the Bish, West United, Galway United, Limerick FC and Aston Villa; interviews with former team-mates as Galway United and Aston Villa; his international career; his GAA days with St Michael’s and Western Stars; as well as transcripts of both a radio interview he did in 1993 talking about how he signed for Villa; and his speech at the Galway Sports Stars awards in January of this year, when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The programme goes on sale this week for ONLY €5.

Less than 3 weeks now until United kick-off in the u19 league in Terryland. Can't wait. The Chick Deacy game to look forward to on Saturday too.

Yes.

At the request of the FAI, GUST have helped put together an under 19 team for the coming under 19 league season. The FAI insisted upon two things, that the team be called Galway United Supporters Trust FC and also out of Terryland Park.

It was reported in the media that..
Quote:
Former County Manager of Tipperary South Riding, Ned O’Connor, is understood to have been asked by the FAI to meet with Mervue United, SD Galway, the Galway United Supporters’ Trust and the Galway FA this week(3 weeks ago), and then draw up a blueprint for what he sees as the way forward for the game here in relation to the domestic league.
There will be no word on these talks until they are completed. Any important decisions that need to be taken by GUST will be voted upon at an open meeting.

I'm not involved with GUST and I have no idea what was or is being said at these meetings, but I know that any sort of link-up with Mervue or Salthill would alienate the rest of Galway football from GUST and what they've been working on with people involved in football in Galway.

Neither clubs position in the league is sustainable. Hopefully the rumour about the FAI's intentions is true and a United team, both in name and in practice, is back in the league in March.

GUST are just part of the solution. They didn't ask to be in this position, but in order to restore Galway football to where it should be, they have to do their part.

Great turnout tonight, 239 despite the shocking weather. I'd say it would have hit 300 if it wasn't for the torrential rain.

Mervue are well drilled and were worth the 3-1 lead at half-time but our lads grew into it in the second half. A lot of the Mervue lads have played alongside each others for years, so United had to work hard.

Fairplay to Noel Connolly too. The pitch was soaked but the new drainage did the job and the ball zipped around for the 90 mins.

Great to be back in Terryland and proud of the lads in maroon.

Roll on Wexford next week.

It could've been the highest ever attendance at a LOI U19 league game?

I don't know but it was higher than UCD v Derry in the cup and higher than half the first division games last night.

It was COLD in Terryland!

Some great football played in fairness. Some of the tackles had me nervous though coz they weren't holding back and that ground was slippy.

Mervue are a tidy team too.

Yeah, can't disagree about Mervue. That's what you get when lads play together for years.

Our lads have been training a while but I don't know if that XI really played together as a team yet.

Emlyn Long is working hard at it, but it's hard to teach players the right way to play in such a short space of time. They acquitted themselves well and they'll learn a lot from last night.

There were players from all over the region. Half a dozen from the city, another half dozen from Clare and then lads from Ballyhaunis, Woodford, Craughwell, Ballinasloe, Oranmore, Kinvara.

Great to see. Was proud of them. Hard match to start with. They will only get better.

I'm just watching the first half the video back now and the defence passed the ball really well when they decided to play it. A bit too much hoofing the ball to the attackers though. They didn't win many aerial challenges at all.

It'll come with game time as you said. There's a good basis there.

By the time they come back to Terryland again for the 4th match, they should be a gelled a bit and more comfortable in possession.

Big news lads...

We now have a place to call home.

Quote:
Galway United Supporters Trust's new home

Hi all,

As you are probably aware we have been been sharing East United's facilities at Castlepark for training and matches since the beginning of our journey in the League of Ireland. Over the last few weeks this arrangement has gathered pace, and at a meeting of the East United committee last week they voted to give Galway United Supporters Trust a permanent home at Castlepark. A group from both clubs has had a number of meetings with local representatives to apply for a joint long-term lease on the pitches and training ground.

This is a massive boost for us as a club as it will be the first time in Galway United's history that we will have a permanent training base, home and clubhouse. At present the U19's are training two evenings a week at East. They have their own dressing room, showers and gear storage room. This time last season we were training in three different venues with all the added problems of getting the gear from A to B.

As two clubs joining together to share facilities, we are getting to work straight away to improve the pitches and training ground. There are three immediate things on the agenda of works:

• Pitches need sanding: This will enable both clubs to train at Castlepark during the winter, and in turn save on all weather costs. Approx cost €3,000 for 200 tonne of pitch sand
• Extra floodlights to be installed: Approx cost €1,500
• A heavy duty lawnmower to be purchased: Approx cost €4,500

We are starting a facilities development fund with a difference, we are dividing the main pitch at Castlepark into 640 spaces which can be bought for €30 a space, for this the buyer will get their name or company name on a sign which will be on the clubhouse wall for 1 year and also entered into a draw which will take place on the 8th December 2012 for 5 cash prizes of €2,500, €1,000, €500, €500,€500.

This is the start of something very exciting for Galway United Supporters Trust and between ourselves and East United we can develop an important sporting facility for the area.

If any individual or business is interested in taking a pitch space please post here or give me a call and I will put your name down on a space

Many thanks,

Mike Daly
