It sounds to me like were headed for another court case. Surely making broadcasters use a certain language is against the EU laws on free trade, etc.

The premier league are just asking for trouble with their recent actions.

one thing for sure, the big clubs will get bigger and the smaller clubs will struggle. The pricing on subs in uk/roi need to be looked at. Hopefully now with soarview launching, people will start leaving sky and they will have to start looking at the prices they pay. I for one would gladly take cyfra+, al jazzera and then uk free to air/soarview instead of sky. All at an 8th of the price!

Cyfra is now on a par with most European providers with one 3pm game in a foreign language and it costs nothing compared to most.

The bad thing about that is that more people will be go out and buy Cyfara cards and this will proabably drive the prices up.

I highly doubt it as then people in Poland will not be able to afford it.

The F.A must have been put under pressure from Sky in regards to Foreign Provider's having English Commentary available on the Audio button.... The F.A haven't done anything (yet) about the providers having the F.A cup available in English.

Has to be down to Sky.

Canal + Finland - Press release

CANAL + 's Premier League-supply changes
CANAL + 's Premier League-supply changes on Saturdays from 17 matches played in such a way that the CANAL + channels will address only one simultaneous Premier League match. Other software will remain unchanged. In the background is the EU's decision of the Court.

EU Court's decision, the Premier League for transmitting television companies will be able to make Saturday's round of 17 at the same time only one match. For non-Saturday from 17 matches in the decision does not affect.

The decision comes into effect next Saturday 10 March.

CANAL + 's supply of other planned football Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A matches is normally seen, and weekends Premier League-We offer you the decision despite the 5-6 live matches as well as numerous post-broadcast. decision has no effect on Katsomo.fin Premier League, or the provision of Sonera Home TV Canal + Premier League service.

Background of the decision

Great Britain has not been televised on Saturday, at 17 (Finnish time) matches at all. EU court ruling on the free movement of goods within the EU allowed the practice in the UK outside of TV signal for presentation to the capture in the UK. As a result of this is that European TV companies can not submit the same simultaneous matches on Saturdays at 17 Other events, the decision does not affect.

Sky and the FAPL have denied the motivation behind this. Their motivation is maxiumum money streams. Greed to you or I.

Of course this latest stunt will no doubt be challenged in EU courts. Whilst English is only the official language in Ireland, UK, Malta and Gibraltar, English language use represents 51% of the EU population.

Furthermore, not all national languages have been accorded the status of official EU languages. So someone better tell those in Luxembourg that they cannot use Luxembourgish, an official language of Luxembourg since 1984, or that the Cypriats cant use Turkish, an official language of Cyprus.

Outside officially recorded languages for countries, knowledge of English is fairly widespread across the EU, you cannot take the audio stream option away.

I assume that there could be a breach of contract and the EPL will have to pay back money to TV companies that brought 3pm rights?

Seems that this will make illegal web streams and other means of piracy more rife. As far as i can make out the selection of 3pm games will be there, but from multiple providers and not just one provider like before (Viasat)?

How does this affect the likes of Tring who are Albanian?

One of the reasons i think that it doesnt matter who bids for EPL in the UK/ROI Sky will always be getting their fair share of EPL. Seems Sky are in the hands or even run the EPL at present.

Its all sour grapes for me, Sky don't seem to be bothered with all the ex pat bars etc in the med showing UK copyrighted coverage!!!

Wouldn't it be funny if the likes of Nova, Canal+, D+ took sky to court and stopped them from broadcasting EPL coverage that clashed with their coverage (Due to the bars in many many cities and holiday resorts showing Sky UK/ROI). Lots of lost revenue there for the local providers.

Its just showing the pure greed that soccer has become now, But after the shocking incident involving Muamba at the Spurs/Bolton match at the weekend it has put a lot of it into perspective.

Just an after thought, whats stopping teams playing at other times other than 3pm on a saturday? Are they contracted too? I notice Sky has the power to change kick off times to suit them, can a team change their own kick off time if say a foreign broadcaster wants them to?

My feeling is that the next packages the F.A will release to from 2013/16 for the UK market will see only a couple of games being played at the traditionally 3pm slot to get round this draconian ruling.

Just hope 2-3 providers don't get say 2-3 packages each & have us all dishing out 100 euro to view them.

Scudamore To consider Selling TV Rights To The Highest Bidder
The Premier League are actively considering selling their next set of TV rights across the whole of Europe rather than just Britain, chief executive Richard Scudamore disclosed.

Scudamore, who also confirmed they would have no option but to sell the rights to Al Jazeera should they outbid Sky and meet all the criteria, said PL officials were deciding whether selling the rights on a pan-European basis would provide more income and protection.

A European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on landlady Karen Murphy's case stated they must not give "broadcasters territorial exclusivity on a member state basis", and Scudamore said: "We have two scenarios we are weighing up. One of the implications of the ECJ decision is that we are still working on whether we might actually sell rights on a pan-European basis."

He continued: "We are still actually deliberating whether we should sell on a territory by territory basis, or whether with what's happened post-ECJ with the freedom of movement it's actually more applicable and you would actually get better protection or a better return if you sold on a pan-European basis."

Al Jazeera are expected to rival Sky for the dominant position as the domestic broadcaster in Britain, and ESPN are also likely to bid for some packages when the rights go out for tender, which is expected to be during the next three months.

Sky have held the majority of the domestic packages during all 20 years of the Premier League's existence and though Scudamore said loyalty counted for a lot they were bound to abide by competition regulations - and that means selling to the highest bidder.

Industry experts have speculated that Al Jazeera's financial clout, which has already seen the Middle East-based broadcaster wrest the French league rights from Canal Plus, could provide a serious threat to Sky.

Scudamore added: "Loyalty counts in many senses. But, remember, our current arrangements - and I see no reason why our future arrangements won't have to be - are regulated, and are regulated heavily.

"Our packages are put out into the open market and we have to have an open tender for those packages. We have to sell to the highest compliant bidder.

"Whilst, of course, we have a huge regard and respect and Sky's made a fantastic impact on our business, ultimately whatever umbilical cord there might be as an ongoing, working, commercial relationship, that gets severed once that tender gets issued. There's nothing they can do other than be the best bidder to win those rights."
