I always thought that this was the civic equivalent of donning a Che Guevara T-Shirt. If that's the proposed monument, all the more so.
Given that there's 20,000 students in Galway its kind of appropriate, so can we cover the statue up every Friday morning and unveil it again every Monday morning? Seriously, I think the Guevara links to Galway are tenuous and as for him being an influential or important historical figure - only in the way Marilyn Monroe or James Dean are influential actors. It all about the pre-mature death and the iconic image. If we want a statue of an adventurer why not Garabaldi? |
