Anyone working in IT support have about 4 years exp and a degree no Certs but plaining on doing itil foundation as I hear a lot of company down there are looking for it, is that right?

Coming over on WHV but should be on defacto after a year

Will I have much trouble in my first year and any ideas what kind of salary I could expect from people been there done that?

Heading to Sydney not arriving till aug, sent my cv to quite a few recruitment agencies but unsurprisingly I've head nothing back not even please get in contact closer to the time.

IT is doing very well here at the moment

Don't expect to hear anything (unless some BS line from an agency) until you land, as well they can't place you until you land, which means they won't get paid

best bet is look at seek.com.au when you arrive.

If you go defacto (I assume on a 457?) ASAP you would be more appealing to employers ... though usually 6months is a good number, if you are good they will want to keep you.

Google "IT salary survey Australia", you'll find surveys by all major recruitment agencies with salary ranges and median salaries etc for various IT roles. I found the Michael Page one fairly accurate for my salary/role but I have no idea about IT support salaries tbh.

Re contacting agencies, half of them will bin your email as soon as they see WHV, when they see you are still in Ireland, the rest will do same. Unless you are in very specialist role where they will get loads of $$$ commission for placing you they won't make the effort of dealing with someone the other side of planet when they have dozens of local applicants ready to interview and get them their quick commission. When you are in Aus and ready to interview you'll find they will take your application seriously and you'll get callbacks.

you don't need links, just look up Hays, Hudson, peoplebank, paxus... i've always had lots of work with Hays before getting a government contract, so i would highly recommend them. my boss also told me they always saw consistently good candidates from paxus, so they know what they're at too. what kind of IT work are you trying to get into though?

as for it support jobs in general, you do need to be here (in Aus) and just visit a recruitment agency, and take it from there. my best advice though is don't be a snob about job offers, be sure that if you have to, you turn it down for the right reasons.

Would u care to make an guess what someone with 3+ years 2nd level experience might expect? The min and max for these jobs seem to be between 18 and 35 $ an hour

Define support? IT is good money, $18 would be way too low, unless you were on the phone telling people to turn on and off again etc.

depends on where you are, and who you work for. Additionally, is can depend on the agency you go through too.

I've worked L1 for over 6 years, and L2/3 for over 2 now. In my experience (in SA), IF you land yourself a L2 job, it might not be that much more than a L1 salary. I've seen places have a hard time getting people to do the L1 work, so the pay can be a bit higher to attract someone to do the work. Back in 2009, I was getting up to $26-$30 p/h for L1 stuff. But these were short term contracts through the likes of Hays, and others. Last year, before I won a government contract I was a bit more than that for L2, but I knew guys who were on up to $40 p/h (different agency). Bear in mind this is all plus superannuation too. You could live well enough here on $25p/h, put it that way. If you can manage to get more, all the better. Nobody really wants to sit answering the phones, but don't be put off by it if it helps you get a foot in the door. I noticed it was easier to get work after already having at least one aussie employer initially. But if you go through agencies, they're usually looking for people to do short term contracts anyway, so they won't care you're only here on a WHV or whatever.
