Dog warden rang me today. Couldn't find house, had to guide him in. Very hard for him, must be 4 houses in the Village. Nice fella must be said, wanted to know if I want to go further with my complaint, re dog bite, which I'm not. Will issue a warning under some Section of the control of dogs act blaa blaa. Check for licence and will inspect the road again in a few days. If dogs are found wandering on road again, they will be taken to Dog Pound and not released till owner pays fines. This he says sorts most owners out. He encouraged me to instruct other cyclists who encounter dog attacks while cycling to report such incidents to the Dog Wardens. This will make the roads safer for us all and keep him in a job.

Seriously... the crazyguyonabike touring website recommends pepper spray as the best deterrent for dogs who annoy cyclists.

see http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?doc_id=194

Pepper spray is illegal in Ireland but there are recipes for a home made equivalent online. A dogs sense of smell is about 1000 to 10000000 times more sensitive than a humans... one blast and you will be doing the dog, its owner and the cycling community a favour if you stop even one mutt chasing bicycles.

Bear in mind that we have the potential of dealing with rabid packs of quasi-wolves out here, not like the harmless rabies-free canines you have to deal with in Ireland.
Excellent idea. Going to do this.

Could always put little nails or spikes in the end of the cable too

This is the only sane suggestion in this thread

On a side note while I understand being annoyed/scared by a badly behaved dog. All you guys dreaming up imaginative ways to torture hurt these dogs ,need therapy. Or at least added to a watch list. I worry it’s only a matter of time before you curiosity leads you to action and then we are only a few steps away from you in the Dublin mountains burying the prostitutes you have murdered.

Have you ever seen the damage a dog can do to a fast moving cyclist?

The issue isn't being biten really. Its when they get stuck in the spokes and you get launched off the bike at 40kph. thats the issue. Known one lad who smashed aload of bones and punctured a lung when a little sh1t of a dog jumped into his front spokes. (Dog didn't make it either)

Obviously leave the spikes out of the cable but a nice length of cable to whack a dog that gets close enough to knock you of your bike is a great idea.

That would involve putting panniers on my bike. A step too far I'm afraid.

Is it just me that sees the cable coming back into the spokes / drive train with dire consequences if this is attempted while riding?

Yeah, you need the imagination to make the owners suffer too. Maybe throw the mutts some doggie treats laced with laxatives.

You're way ahead of the curve there in the imagination stakes my friend. We're just trying to discourage our canine friends from doing us serious damage, you're out murdering prostitutes and burying them in the mountains. Nice!
