Knee Injury - treatment

Hi All, not sure if this is in the right place. I have had a problem with my knee on and off for the last few years and have finally decided to get it sorted. I play in goal for a Gaelic Football team. The pain varies between my knee-cap, the side of my knee and the back of it. I've never had it seen to so I have no idea what the diagnosis would be. When I wear tape it eases it a little but then the next day or two afterwards, it clicks when I walk.

My question is this, should I go to the doctor to get referred to a physio? Or go to a physio and get referred for an x-ray or MRI done?
Any suggestions please?

Do you stretch?Could be tight IT bands, go to a recommended sport massage therapist and try that first before you pay out big money for scans and physios.

I had really bad pain in my knee from a cycle race I did, thought Id done serious damage to my knee and it turned out to be very tight IT bands, one massage sorted it out for me, also try foam rolling to ease tightness.

No medical advice being offered here but foam rolling will tell you where the true tender points are...try it before ya go further...
If you aint got a roller, use some wavvin pipe instead..........twice as hard, twice as painfull

Could be a ton of things, many of which may not require an MRI or xray.

Best thing you can do is go to a good sports physio. There's so many potential causes of knee pain, you'll hear anterior knee pain is caused by glute issues quite a bit, if your patellar isn't tracking properly it could be something else... point being - no one here can tell you, but a good physio will be able to. Go there first.

No more medical or treatment advice please, I'll leave this open to allow people to recommend a Physio in the OPs area

Because the OP has an injury which needs to assessed by a professional. If you need clarification PM me, I don't really want to have a discussion about the charter on thread.
