Sunday Dec 4th

4.48 miles - Time: 34:27 - Avg Pace: 7:42 min/mi garmin link

Headed out for a easy 8 miler tonight but with no hat or gloves with me, it was so cold I very quickly changed my mind and made it into a shorter kind of tempo run. Miles 1 to 4 - 7:54, 7:31, 7:32, 7:20. Easy last half mile.

Tuesday Dec 6th

8 miles - Time: 1:07:50 - Avg Pace: 8:29 min/mi treadmill run

Easy 8 miles on the treadmill tonight. Another three episodes of Seinfeld to pass the time. One of them 'The Contest', my favorite Seinfeld episode ever.

Wednesday Dec 7th

6 miles - Time: 51:48 - Avg Pace: 8:42 min/mi treadmill run

Had been thinking about this one all day today. I knew I wanted to do a decent enough session but wasn't sure what. In the end I decided on some hill intervals on the treadmill. The plan was to do the 7 mph 3 x 2.5 minute hills at 10% incline with recovery at the same pace lasting till my heart rate dropped to 135 bpm. After 2.5 miles warmup I hit 10% incline button for the first interval. Wow is all I can say, barely hung on for the full 2 and a half minutes, same with the second one and had to cut the third one short by around 15 seconds. Cooled down for appox 1.5 miles. Overall this was a great session and over the next few weeks hope to increase this to five by 3 minute reps. Heart rate got up to 177 bpm which is 95% of max.

Saturday Dec 17th

5.12 miles - Time: 43:23 - Avg Pace: 8:28 min/mi garmin link

First run in 9 days!! Felt great to get back out and injuries seemed to hold up fairly well. Headed up to the local GAA centre for some laps, so it ended up 2 miles on road with 3 on grass. Body felt heavy towards the end of the run and the HR seemed a tad high for this pace. To be expected I suppose after the lay-off.
Not out of the woods yet but encouraging, patience seems to be paying off.
One more mile between now and the 31st and I'll have hit target of 1500 miles for the year

We're down in Sligo till the 27th and Maria's parents are married 40 years on the 28th but we'll try and call out for a couple of hours sometime after that.

Friday Dec 23rd

4.56 miles - Time: 37:58 - Avg Pace: 8:20 min/mi garmin link

Another first run in a week job today. This time was confined to the bed for the first half of the week with serious tummy issues. Thought I'd die!! In terms of seriousness I'd put it on the same scale as this

As for today's run, it went fairly well. Was surprised with the pace when I got back to the car, speedier than planned. Used the garmin app for the iphone for the first time today as the flippin watch was dead. Actually I think it was more accurate. Broke through 1500 today

Going to be out of action for the next couple of weeks, pretty gutted. Just started a 7 day course of antibiotics today for a chest infection. It seems to be one thing after another lately. I'm thinking I didn't take enough time recovering after Berlin and DCM and just completely ran myself down. So the OH has put her foot down and banned me from running till I'm fully recovered.
That means I'm out of the Dungarvan 10 miler unfortunately. I'll wait a couple of weeks before deciding whether to defer Connemarathon for a year. Maybe I might just complete rather than compete.
So that's it for another running year, hope everyone has a great 2012 and hits all their running goals.

Total miles for 2011 - 1508

7.67 miles - Time: 1:07:38 - Avg Pace: 8:49 min/mi garmin link

First run since Christmas Eve I had to bring my eldest daughter over to NUI Maynooth for one of her Christmas exams so decided to take advantage of the waiting time and get the first run of the year in. I felt I had to run today if I'm going to start a 12 week program for Connemarathon next week. So even though I'm only half way through my second antibiotic for a chest infection in as many weeks the OH reluctantly gave her blessing.

I did up a garmin course last night which brought me over to Kilcock coming back around to Maynooth by the back roads for a total of 7.67 miles. I targeted a 8:40 avg for the run but probably didn't warmup properly and did the first couple of miles a bit quick because after 3 or 4 miles I started to get a fair bit of pain in the right groin. At this stage I was about half way so decided to continue the run as planned but the pace dropped well down. I stretched it well afterwards and am not really that worried about it. Will go for a short run tomorrow to see how it is.

On the positive side of things i was delighted with the run overall. There was no evidence of any trouble with my PF or calf/shin problems, even though I won't be counting any chickens just yet. The lungs felt ok considering but based on HR figures I suspect the chest infection hasn't gone just yet.

Easy run today. Groin still a bit sore but happy enough I'll be able to run through it and HR also still a bit higher than normal. Hopefully it won't be a case of learning the hard way again but I'm going to go ahead with Connemarathon training Tuesday.

8 miles - Time: 1:05:30 - Avg Pace: 8:13 min/mi treadmill HR

Our little boy turns one tomorrow and with a little party tonight the only way this run was happening was an early pre-work run. After a very tough first six months of life the weeman's doing fab now and as can be seen took a great interest in his birthday cake. I think we were all giving him a bit of a hand blowing out his little candle.

General Aerobic w/ 10x100m strides.
Found this run tough enough for a general aerobic run. The 6:35am start probably didn't help but it's more likely down to a general loss fitness in December between injury and sickness than anything else. The plan was to keep the avg HR around 145 but only managed 153. Delighted there was no sign of the groin strain from Saturday's run but a little nervous that the PF in my left heel might be still lurking away in the background. So that's day one of Connemarathon training done, good to be back in a plan again.

Intended doing my usual 5 mile local loop but made a change when there was no one training up in the Meath centre of excellence pitches as I was passing by. Can't bring myself to go in when there are teams training in there. Laps around the pitches can be a bit boring but the grass is definitely easier on the legs so I'm going to do this more often. Very easy recovery run today. Tomorrow 13 miles w/ 8 at MP
