On defence:

My running game is awful online, but excellent in Franchise mode against the CPU. It seems I can never find space online and it's the complete opposite against the CPU. I must be doing something wrong here surely?

Throwing the ball I'm pretty decent, although I do sometimes get flustered and throw the ball to the wrong receiver resulting in an interception, but I'm improving. Again, like my defense question do you switch man to control the receiver or let the CPU handle that?

The teams I played with were Kansas City (I've been using them in Franchise mode and Jamaal Charles is a beast) against Detroit Lions and I was battered. Eagles against Steelers and I was beat by a touchdown despite building up a decent lead and Eagles against Kansas City in which I was ahead by about 14 and Charles' running game destroyed me despite me not being able to run at all decently with him in my 1st game

Any advice no matter how big or small would be greatfully appreciated.

It all seems very confusing to me at the minute but I'll study it all up, especially that write up from Berty, and I'm sure it will all start to make more sense.

I'll try it all out over the next couple of nights and report back to let you know how I'm getting on.

Got madden 11 this year and it was the first time I bought an American Football game and I so much more enjoyed it to any other sport game, more challanging and also it gave me a much better understanding of American Football and I hope to follow it more this season. So as I would like to get this game Im wondering would it be worth somebody like myself getting it as I dont quite know player names etc. Is the gameplay updated every year or is it just team rosters, cheers.

Yep. Gameplay is updated every year as well as rosters

You may as well trade in old Madden though you'll get very little for it and get the new one
If another version was about to be released I wouldn't bother but the new one is just out so you'll get a full year out of it

gameplay is updated every year though this years updates seem to do more harm than good, hopefully a patch of some sort will be out in a month or two to fix it

Well, I've played a further 3 games tonight and lost them all, but the good news is my defence is improving ten-fold. No longer am I conceding TD after TD from the running game nor am I losing a lot of yards from it either. I've gone from conceding around 35 + points a game to around 20 + points a game which is a good improvement just from using the formations tab as recommended and I'm learning more and more with each game.

Now my problem seems to be in sorting my offence. I pick throwing plays and 90% of the time it seems that no-one is open for me to pass to, everyone is covered and if I do pass I throw at best an incompletion and usually an interception. If I hold off a bit waiting for my runners to get free I usually get sacked or forced into throwing the ball away. I must be picking the wrong plays I guess? My running game has improved on offense, but my throwing game is still a joke.

Also, what teams do you lads favour when playing online? I understand that Eagles, Packers and Patriots seem to be the 3 best from looking at the ratings, but obviously they might not be the best to play with compared to others. I've been changing from game to game trying to find which team best suits my game and I reckon the Eagles and the Patriots are the two teams I've performed best with, however, I don't really want to be picking the Eagles all the time as I guess it's the equivalent of people picking Barcelona or Real Madrid on FIFA which does my head in It also doesn't feel as rewarding when I eventually nail it and start winning games.
