Cover Songs

I'm a huge fan of good covers, particularly good acoustic covers, of almost any type of song and in many cases, and I know in years past that I may have been accused of being a heretic or witch or burned at a stake or all three for saying it but I feel that the cover can be much better than the original, there I've said it, thank you internet anonymity.

I suppose the main reason I have started this thread is to broaden my own horizons and and see what other cover songs are out there and what people are in to and who knows, maybe even add them to my Ipod collection. I'll get the ball rolling by linking a few of my own favourites.

First up is Wonderwall by Ryan Adams. Being honest it's probably my favour cover of any song. I was never a huge fan of Oasis or their version of it but I think it's been nailed here. I remember reading a quote from noel gallagher where he said something along the lines of it being the definitive version of Wonderwall, so high praise indeed.

Next up is a cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic Landslide by The Smashing Pumpkins.

Lastly we have John Mayer's cover of Free Fallin, the 1989 song by Tom Petty.

There are plenty more that I could mention but considering the time, I'll leave it for another day

This guy does a few other great covers as well: MGMT, Daft Punk, My Bloody Valentine. Have a potter about the youtube links and I imagine you'll find them.

This crowd also do a few more classical covers of rock bands. Most of it is pretty good.

Since you've mentioned acoustic tracks in particular, Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters recorded an acoustic album of Bon Scott-era AC/DC songs called What's Next to the Moon. It's excellent.
Also well worth investigating is Girl Versions by Emm Gryner, wherein she radically reinterprets songs by acts as diverse as Def Leppard, Blur, Death Cab For Cutie, The Clash and others. It's mainly just vocal and piano, with some occasional cello. Not just a great covers album, but a superb album in its own right.
And of course, a terrific collection - though far from acoustic - was the Foo Fighters Medium Rare LP, which gathered together the bulk of their recorded cover versions.

Neither of the two cover I suggest are acoustic Im afraid but they are very very differnt from the originals!

The first is the Byrds who covered a huge amount of other peoples songs and also wrote loads of songs themselves.

They loved Bob Dylan and their cover of Mr Tambourine Man launched their careers

The second song is Fairport Convention based on a Bob Dylan composition but a Manfred Mann hit. However Fairport Convention decided to sing the song in French - sounds great though!

Actually for refernce heres the Manfred Mann version which is also a cover version

Noel Gallagher's version of Wonderwall, originally recorded by Manchester rock 'n' roll pop group Oasis.
Noel Gallgher's version of There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, originally recorded by Manchester India group The Smiths.

Always thought this song would sound good as an acoustic cover

The Twilight Singers do a fantastic cover of Prince's 'When Doves Cry'
I can't look at youtube on this PC, but it's worth looking out for.
