I have as little time for the WBC as anyone else but I find it hard to summon the level of vitriol towards them as others profess. Now a lot of that is because I have not felt the first hand emotional effects their behavior can have and their general disrupting influence on the community but because of that I can also take away some interesting observations on the personalities involved and the conflicts that exist between some of them (involving Louis mainly).

All the younger members of the church seem like very nice people deep down, some of the older ones right on the cusp of full indoctrination of the mind. If the real drivers of the movement, as the doc portrays it, were to be removed (namely Fred Phelps, Fred Jr., Shirley and that guy who does their A/V work) then the thing would crumble.

Fred Phelps has a face that I can only describe as ravaged by deep hatred and anger within him. Little tiny eyes and generally a big scowley head on him. I'm not sure if there's any scientific evidence behind the notion that deeply held negative emotions can be themselves have a tangible negative effect on one's appearance but Fred sr. is a great candidate for proof.

Shirley Phelps loves the attention. There's a clip of her on Fox News being predictably attacked by the host and her just there smiling away through it. Somebody should do a voice over on that clip of her inner voice going "I love being on Teeeeeeveeeeee!!!!!"

Jack was trying to infiltrate and perhaps destroy the church on behalf of gay people the world over. Unfortunately the only way he could have been anymore obvious was if he had shown up in drag with a boyfriend in tow! Jeez.... Bit of a strange person really.
