HorseFlame 6kw solid fuel stove

Hi,

I recently installed a HorseFlame multi fuel stove (it's called a Gabriel 6kw, similar to Stanley Oisin). Its connected to an unlined flue using a 90 bend and a 5" to 8" reducer.

Lighting the stove and building the fire up to grate level goes fine and everything seems to be working as it should but my problem is that the stove does not seem to be putting out any real heat. It is significantly worse than the previous open fire. When the fire is in full flight you can actually pat it as if it was an oil heater. It's like as if the heat is being contained inside the stove instead of being dispersed

The draw of air through the stove seems reasonable and I am burning the best anthracite. With all the talk about how fantastic stoves are I am really disappointed as I was expecting to be walking around in my underwear drinking margaritas by now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Pat

If your stove is a boiler model it wont throw out much heat to the room it is in. I have a stanley oisin and I have the same experience with it. Does it heat the rads and hot water ok?

Well, the unlined flue is a bad job. Open fire flues are certainly not suitable for stoves. A 6 kW heatsource might be too much for the chimney. Check this with the installer, contact a heating engineer, maybe the local fire safety officer.

If it says 6 kW on the stove, is this the output in total incl. the flue-gas?

There are stoves designed to burn materials and others which are designed to heat the the room in which they are installed.

So ask for the stated efficiency. This can be meassured as well.

No it's not a boiler model, just a stand-alone. One thing I did notice with my model is that the fire brick liner in the firebox was softer than any other model I since looked at i.e. you could scrape it easily with your nail whereas all other types had either a hard brick or steel liner.

Anyone I spoke to on the issue say that as long as there is a draw up the flue and a fire can be easily maintained then the stove should blast out the heat.

Thats unusual. What size room is it in. Is stove sitting out on hearth or inset. Is all internals of stove intact ie baffles etc.

The room is approx. 4x7x2.5m, the stove is sitting out in the heart and everything is intact as I went back to showroom to compare with other models.

Have you checked the top baffle to ensure its positioned correctly? Chances are if its not the heat would be lost up the chimney quite rapidly. To be honest from my dealings i haven't found the Gabriel to be a very good model

daber,

The baffle plate is in the correct position i.e. pushed up flush with the back wall as the stove is connected out the back. What specific problems have you come across with the Gabriel?

There might be too much draw on your chimney, I dont know if installing twin wall flue will combat this. I would get sales person who sold it out to inspect it along with installer, what are chances of getting it exchanged for another model? You should insist on a solution being reached.

You're room size calculation works out at 4kw, so a 6kw stove should be more than enough, too much if anything.

Are you sure your chimney is not lined? Surely if you are using 8" to 5" reducer it is using a clay liner?

This is vermiculite board I assume, such as skamolex. It is indeed fairly soft and easily scrapable but it is marvellous stuff.

How many times have you lit it. I assume you have tried playing around with different settings. When you have it burning, are the flames big and lively or small and slow? I get the fire going and when it has really caught hold, close down the dampers to closed/almost closed and let the heat pour out and the tertiary air takes a life of it's own.

This is not the point, sip99plo. The question is what length is you chimney from the in-feed upwards. And what are it's horizontal dimensions. And is the stove mentioned the only thing connected to it i.e. are there other openings.

Did a competent person install the stove?

Good staff wants good money.

I have a hamco allen stove in my sittingroom no boiler. When it was first installed there wasnt much heat from it and the room had a smoky smell in it. After a week of this i got fed up and decided it must be clogged with soot. All the inner plates are removable so i removed these and cleaned them, checked the chimney for soot, nothing there.I then changed the baffle plate around(baffle plate is a flat plate with a short curved piece at the end)what a difference it made. for such a small stove the heat from it is brillant. Maybe your baffle plate is installed the wrong way round. Worth a try anyway

Dont install a flexi flue liner, pain in the a** always have to be cleaned(3 times a year) i put them in a couple of my jobs, always recommended by manafacturers. Best way is have the cast iorn coming out off the top or the back of stove and finish it 300mm above a steel plate made to fit the fire place. Steel plate should be made to fit in the chimney above the stove not a big job for a person that does steel fabrication. This is the best way ive tested and tryed them all...
