Path to getting into PR

Hi there,

I'm really interested in getting into PR so I'm just asking what would be your opinion on how to get into Public Relations?

Is there courses I should do or internships I can apply for?

Thanks

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Larry

Where are you coming from on this. Are you finishing school or another degree.

The course in the Fitzwilliam is a popular starting point, that has work experience.

Thanks

I reckon experience is the key, so any qualification should have a strong work experience element. Not sure what DKIT course is like in that regard

I agree with advice above re experience because that is what will stand to you these days but I wouldnt apply to anything without at least a BA in communications/ PR.

I know that some ITs do undergrads in it and there are quite a few postgrads, with MA in DIT being the most well perceived.

I would suggest applying to a course of your choice and doing all the PR work experience (it'll be unpaid but really stand to you) you can get your hands on. There are a number of areas in PR so it would be wise to work out early which area you would like to work in so you can tailor your course projects and work experience to that goal (e.g consumer, corporate, public affairs, fashion, charity....)

How would I go about getting experience? Is there somewhere to start? I've applied for Carlow and Dundalk. Carlow is preferred because it offers a wider degree in PR.

Thanks

Go to PRII or PRCA website and get a list of agencies to contact and also contact companies directly to do inhouse experience. Put together a good CV and cover letter stating your interest and that you want to get experience, find out the best person to send the email to and contact them directly.

Remember PR is very much about presentation and promotion so make sure that there are NO typos, it is well presented and don't be afraid to sell yourself. Maybe there is project assistance you can offer to do (Facebook/ Twitter) or prehaps you can shadow someone for a few days.

Dont be afraid to contact people and ask them to go for coffee for advice. ideas because we all started somewhere!
