Hi Guys,

I'm planning on revamping my pc over the christmas.

Currently:
Q6600 G0, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz on ABIT IP35PRO Mobo.

I've bought another 4GB 800Mhz and an Intel X25M SSD 80GB (OS)

and i'm wondering should I overclock the CPU too to give an extra bit of responsiveness?

I'd like to get it to 3Ghz if it would be easily achievable. By that I mean no memory overclocking and very litte voltage tweaking.

Would I need to buy a better cooler for that speed? On stock at the moment.

Or is it not worth overclocking, will I not notice it a bit? The computer is primarily for development with a little gaming.

Any thoughts?

You should certainly try to OC but as we're dealing with a quad you'll only be able to achieve a mild OC without dropping €15-30 on a better cooler. You could run it at or near 3GHz with the stock HSF but it would be uncomfortably toasty for the CPU

With an upgraded cooler, however, you could easily hit 3.5GHz with that mobo - allegedly it was one of the few decent mobos ABit ever made...

That's not too bad for a cooler I suppose. Would that get me a good cooler?

I'll have a look at a few guides and see how I go.. any tips for me before I start?

To check it's a stable overclock do I just run Prime95 along with tools like CoreTemp etc to monitor temp and voltages etc?

Do you think the 800Mhz will be ok? Is it possible to overclock that also or should I stay away from that baby altogether?

Well, €15 won't get anything at the moment as all the sites with low delivery charges have no decent 92mm coolers

And the same sites have few larger coolers well-priced either, while the sites that do charge those prices for coolers are charging €20-30 for shipping!

The only offer I can find is the CM Hyper 212+ (120mm) for €32 shipped from Komplett. Allegedly. Pixmania are charging €10-20 shipping just for a cooler!

Elara have no decent models under €40 and Dabs have the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev2 (92mm) for €20 and the Xigmatek Red Scorpion (120mm) for €28, but you have to add the usual €10+ delivery for that

Any further afield and the lower prices are outweighed by the high shipping

What graphics, case, fans and PSU do you have by the way?

Oh I see.. I probably won't get around to buying a cooler until January anyway.

I have a Thermaltake Armor Jr(1 rear + 1 front fan blowing over the hds (3x3.5"), GTX260, corsair TX650W. I'm thinking the PSU is adequate but I have a Corsair TX750 on the way for another build that I could use if really needed!

What are your opinions on water cooling?

Fair enough, not sure if Komplett will still be as cheap by then as the Hyper 212+ is €32 with free shipping, if you have to pay for shipping in January it goes up to €45

It might not be the best price for the 212+ but with the lack of shipping it's a great bargain for a semi-high-end cooler

TX650 is more than enough

My opinion on watercooling is: Unless you have a casemod and/or specialist small-form-factor build that needs a lot of heat dissipated or you have a lunacy-booth boutique system you'd be mad to even try. You'd need €200+ of gear to even approach air cooling, and watercooling that can provide significantly better temps than air for a high-end, multi-GPU, ultra-OCd rig would run into the thousands. Odds are a decent mid-range cooler like a Xiggy S1283 spinoff (Red Scorpion, Gaia etc.) or a CM Hyper 212+ would be more than enough even if you decided to go fairly heavy on the volts

Silly feckers are still telling me they still have their free shipping offer on when they don't!

Can't remember what side of the country you live on but if you're on the same side as I they have a pick-up point in Blanchardstown which is free and you can pay by Laser there too

I'm on the older less clockable B3 Q6600, and I've just managed to hit 3.0ghz on 1.24v stable.
I have a Zalman cooler and the temps at 3.0ghz are fine, but over 3.0ghz and it gets a little too warm for my liking.
You should have no problems on a G0 lucky divil.

I have the B3 stepping of this CPU and have it just over 3 years. I have it running at 3.3GHz since day one. FSB is running at 366. 100% stable.

I'm just upgrading my whole rig now to the i7 2600K which can safely OC to 4.6GHz without voltages going haywire

I have mine at about 3.35ghz with after market cooling, never tried it with the standard one and the reason for this was, the original heatsink was never making proper contact and I had just thought it was no able for it at OC speeds but I had the new fan and heatsink bought at that stage. Give it a go and see with the standard one.

I have my voltage crazy high to do this, but I don't mind, it was more an experiment anyway, if it dies it dies.

I reckon I could go higher with a different Mboard.
