Facebook Integration

Hi Marcus & Co,

I noticed and "liked" the other day your test group for TOTD and it got me thinking that having more of a Facebook presence on pix.ie could be something that could maybe be cool. I'm sure loads would disagree but personally i prefer to embrace social networking. Any ideas of further integration with Facebook on pix.ie???

Maybe like capabilities on photo's so that maybe if someone like a photo they can vote for it and possibly like it too so that it would be shared with their circle of friends on Facebook???

Overall, (and i welcome correction on this point) I think it would be good for all parties involved. It would expanse the audience of anyone who uses pix.ie, it would most certainly generate more traffic to pix.ie, people who didn't want Facebook or other people seeing their photos would already have their accounts set to private so it wouldn't be an issue. It would be embracing the way social trends are moving. You've done similar with twitter so are you thinking of Facebook?

I know your currently working on new releases and improvements and I'm nearly 100% sure this wasn't on your list of things a few months ago but it just seems like a good move. (again open to correction). So basically, am i barmy? or is there perhaps a change to come in the future? I'm hoping there is.

Dan

Love it or hate we will be doing more Facebook integration... Sometimes you have to join 'em when you can't beat 'em

What is this Facebook of which you speak?

Probably a passing Fad.

Nothing wrong with Facebook. It's a platform that was waiting to happen for years. It'd be a good way for people to get their pics out to a wider audience too.

Yep! I used to put up my pics on Facebook when I originally started taking them just to get a wider audience, but eventually stopped because their picture hosting was so dreadful (and you essentially lose any copyright on the photo when you upload it there).

Cheers for the reply Marcus,

Any hints as to the direction the integration is going? Perhaps as I mentioned having the option to like/recommend/share a photo? Perhaps allow non pix.ie member comments through a login with facebook functionality. BTW if you use any of these i want kudos

I think even if facebook does begin to fade away, The benefit to pix.ie in the mean time will be worth it. Plus it wouldn't be a huge amount of work to change the integration to whatever the new trend might be.

I don't see that happening for a while anyway as they're putting a lot of work into the site, So I'd be happy to see this.

plus integration in the first place to Facebook is not hard at all.well worth the benefits, people have a negative view of Facebook claiming it breaches your privacy and what not, well do not put your damn info up there if you are not comfortable doing so.

The run of the mill comments of oh god!, Facebook is evil, etc are stupid. Name another company at the moment who are changing the usability and flow of the web at the moment like they are. Odds are you'll struggle to name one if any. Wouldn't worry about Facebook disappearing or becoming less of a trend, they are making themselves relative to all walks of life especially with recent addition of Facebook Places, Upcoming addition of location based adverts, Integration with Myspace revealed a couple of nights ago, the introduction of their new hybrid messaging service, and many more, etc. It's a great move. Kudos to pixie for seeing that.

Anyway, i dont know how i'd feel about a Facebook integration thingy, on one hand i'd like a lot of my friend to see some of my shots on the other hand i don't want to have to explain to them why i'm taking pictures of bridges at 6 o'clock in the morning

No, Facebook aren't evil, but they *do* have a shockingly bad history of unfair or vague usage demands and commercial use of user images. Not to mention appalling sharpening and display. I'm perfectly happy with linking a pix.ie image to my facebook page with a simple copy/paste. Are you thinking of anything more integrated Marcus?

Facebook are currently working on the sharpening and display but I'm not talking about having photos hosted on Facebook. I'm talking about the functionality to "like" or "recommend" or "share" a photo that's on pix.ie, over on your facebook profile. In the event of a "like" or "recommend" facebook would simply show Dan likes Panda as seen on danieljordan13 on pix.ie or something to that effect. The sharing option like on YouTube would merely post a thumbnail which links back to your pix.ie account. This would not need a massive graphics rendering engine in fairness, it's only a thumbnail. Obviously only speculating as none, some or all of this may happen, only Marcus knows.

Google flopped with Buzz and Wave and infringed everyones privacy so badly to the effect that it issued an apology email for the lack of privacy/security on these applications. Twitter is just a pretty message board. With whats to come down the line with Facebook I just can't think of anything else on the web at the moment which is attempting to, developing towards or currently providing a service which will attempt to bring all aspects of your internet life together... Maybe i live under a rock....

I'm not a big fan of facebook. It has a habit of changing so users who thought something was private now isn't. If I put my stuff up there, I encourage others to follow, and many of them might not be that technical and get caught out.

So have integration by all means. But allow people to opt out. Simply and completely.

Just to pick up on here... I cannot find the functionality anywhere, from any of the global photo sharing sites, to allow me to share an album to a Facebook Fan Page. Not my personal page but one of the Fan Pages that I look after.

Can pix.ie help?
