In one sentence can someone explain what difference 2.2 will make to the day to day operation of my SGS?

Cheers.

Kies, for a manual update, mobile carriers for over the air update.

I may be wrong ohn this, but if samsung release an official update, can we not update it regardless of the mobile carrier? (via kies obviously)

try this

  1. Disable “Use Wireless Networks” (Go to Settings > Location & Security > uncheck the box next to “Use Wireless Networks”)
  2. Go to the phone and dial *#*#1472365#*#* (This step throws you into LBSTestMode menu)
  3. In the LBSTestMode menu change “Operation Mode” to MS Based
  4. In the LBSTestMode menu, find “SUPL/CP Settings” and change the Server to Auto
  5. Turn Sky Hook on
  6. Restart
  7. Enable “Use Wireless Networks” (Do this by reversing what you done in step one)

Then why is there different release dates for each country?

Correct (I doubt if it can be done over the air, probably will have to call over to a service centre). Kies would be the preferred way to push across the firmware update.

The PDA(Firmware) and Phone (Modem) packages are carrier independent (but unique to a phone/handset model obviously). The CSC (Carrier Specific Customization) which is bundled in the cache.rfs file contains the carrier/operator settings and will be bundled together. The CSC will be automatically chosen based on the product code (eg I9000HKDMET is Meteor, I9000HKDVDI is Vodafone Ireland etc) contained in the non-volatile memory of the handset (/efs folder) or can be explicitly selected using ADB/special codes.

Ok I took the plunge and went to 2.2 because I cant wait any longer. Used the new version of keis and regedit.

Hi this way i use toget update
1. Run Kies
2. plug in your phone
3. Once connected run file JM2XEE.reg which i have uploaded here
4. Click yes to allow
5. Once done click upgrade in kies
6. Now you see the update for JP6

Hope this help, makes it easy then to edit regedit.

Everything worked but not without its problems. My market app was missing. This seems to be a problem for many different phones upgrading to 2.2.

I had to do a factory reset so lost all my data. I had everything backed up thank god. I also lost all my apn settings. Got them off the vodafone site.

If you fancy trying this dont blame me if it doesnt work.

Now its time to root and use titanium to restore.

Probably because they want to stagger the releases based on the readiness of carriers/country delivery centres to avail, test and support the upgrade.

Tried that myself, didn't work. The pass release I saw was dated 18th, so might take a little longer. Think I'm going to wait until it comes out for me naturally to avoid problems..

Another thing to try might be an open proxy with a nordic ip since apparently it will be released there first

There's a little buzz that official 2.2 has dropped. Im in work so cant check atm. There is also a few comments about kies freezing during the update and people needing to dl an older version of kies.
