I've inherited my dad's Galaxy S, a nice upgrade from my SE X8. I reset it to factory settings and spent a few hours tinkering with it, but then I started having trouble with the WiFi connection. The phone is technically connected to my home network but browsers, apps etc won't connect to the internet. Laptop and my other phone are connected to the WiFi network fine so it's definitely a problem with the Galaxy.
I've deleted and reset the connection, turned the phone on and off, all the usual tricks, to no avail.

I take your on stock firmware?
Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the apps, or clearing there cache/data?
There`s a handy little app called Wifi Analyzer
, I had problems when I was on the SGS1 and trying to connect to the wifi, while on stock, this app helped me out.
