What pisses you off about society?

The world is ending, pick you team of 5 to save it. Fictional or non-fictional.

Favourite film of 2010 so far and why?

Any actor or actressed that you feel are criminally under-rated?

    How about over-rated?

What upcoming films are you most looking forward to and why?

No pets of my own but at home there is Scrappy whom is a King Charles Cavalier. We've had him a long, time at this stage but alongside my youngest brother he's the first to welcome me home.

    1. Too many things about society piss me off, being accosted by drunks at 3 in the afternoon is a big one.

    2. I assume this is where I mention my gf, parents ect but in reality I'd take Jack Bauer, John Wayne, the Alien from Alien, MacGyver and George Bush.

    3. Not sure which is my favourite film thus far, I really enjoyed Solomon Kane though it could have done with a bigger budget and a less rushed ending. Shutter Island was rather good too but I did have problems with it. Tell you what let me think about it and I'll get back to you.

    4. Michael Ironside, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, Casper Van Dien, Sean patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus and Mark Ruffalo to name but a few.

    5. Renee Zellweger is criminally overrated, one of the only actors/actresses top ever be acted off screen by a horse.

    6. Kick Ass was amazingly over rated, it was good but far from the classic many reviewers called it. Alice in Wonderland was also rather over rated, easily the most disappointing film in years. Really wish Burton and Depp would try something different.

5.Inception, it just looks sublime. Nolan has yet to disappoint and DeCaprio is a terrific actor. I've avoid all the articles, trailers, etc so as not to ruin the experience.

Mothers Day also looks terrific. Darren Lynn Bousman's Repo the Genetic Opera was superb and the original is a trashy favourite.

    1. Weekend wear is either my usual, combats, t-shirt and sneakers of t-shirt and pyjama bottoms.

    2. Day at the beach. Never been interested in dog racing or horse racing for that matter.

    3. Not that I remember, I have soberly put on a 2 year old's tazmania pyjama bottoms.

    4. There are a number of films I want to add to my collection but if I had a 100 euro in my hand right now I think I'd head up town and buy the complete Mash and Seinfeld collections. Give me something to watch over the summer.

    5. I don't highlight much but I have been known to write on friends faces when bored.

This fascination with pyjama bottoms is ... worrying! >_>

Please tell me you've never gone to the shops in them!

Ok ... more serious question, or perhaps scenario is a better term ... you are given 3 years and €10 million to develop, or at least begin developing, a sustainable job-creating project linked to / arising out of film ... what would you seek to do?

(I'm using "film" here in its broadest possible sense, not nec. confined to the traditional studio --> cinema type format)

    1. Haven't had time to read much of late with college work, I think the last book I read was Dean Koontz's Velocity which was rather excellent. One of those great books, easily read and enjoyed and gripping enough to be read in one sitting.

    2. Really can't remember, picked up a bunch of vinyl including some Queen and Lynard Skynard. THink the last CD I got was AFI's Black Sails in the Sunset as someone had either borrowed or stolen my original copy.

    3. America by far, just so many different great places there. Like Ireland you can travel an hour in any direction and find a completely different enviroment.

Pyjama bottoms are for either sleeping in or lazing around in on a lazy weekend, I think the furthest I ever travelled in them was to get the newspaper on the front porch.

I have never dreamt of either though I have dreamt of falling and not woken up when I hit the ground.

If I had 10 million I would attempt to set up a company specialising in tracking down rare films and restoring them. I do it on a small-scale atm, searching for rare and hard to find films on anything from beta to vhs to laserdisc to dvd to prints. Depending on the quality fo them I'll do some work on the picture/ audio, create subs for foreign films or take English audio tracks from an old VHS and synch with a new foreign language dubbed DVD. It would be a lot of work but given the number of collectors out there it would be a relatively easy to create a sutatining company.

    1. Not my 5 favourite bands ever but 5 I've been listening to a lot lately.
    The Dillinger Escape Plan
    The Hold Steady
    Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls
    Dashboard Confessional
    Gorillaz

    2. The complete collection of music featured in Supernatural
    Bad Company - Bad Company
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works
Biffy Clyro - Any album tbh
Murder by Death - Who Will Survive & What Will Be Left Of

    3. Viggo Mortensen, possibly the greatest living actor around. I have yet to see him give a bad performance and am looking forward to sitting down later and watching the Road on Blu Ray. Nathan Fillion or Alan Tudyk would be close runners-up with Homer Simpson also a possibility, we look nothing alike but have a similar our look on like and spontaneity, you never know what either of us will do next.

    4. Writer and directing films, the only thing I've ever wanted to do since I was 4 or 5 and discovered that Batman wasnt real so if I couldn't be him I'd make him.

    5. El Orfanato would be my choice though if you havent seen it The Devil's Backbone, directed by Guillermo Del Toro is the greatest Spanish horror film ever. I do enjoy Psycho but given its position in pop culture the first time I watched it I was very disappointed as I had seen all the iconic moments a hundred times before.

    6. I do but I rarely carry it. Were it not for my girlfriend I would never have it on me.

    7. If the opportunity arises go for it.

    8. Dogs by a long way, never been a fan of cats as they are lazy creatures who will watch you die and then feast upon you. That and they do affect my asthma.

    9. The ability to transport to anywhere in teh world and through time at the mere thought of it.

    10. Havent dyed my hair in awhile, last colour was a vibrant green.

Very interesting! (No, I don't have 10 million, nor even 1% of that, and I won't be stealing your idea! :) )

Question struck me because I seem to have been having lots of conversations recently with people about new directions for job creation etc. in Ireland (you know, of the exportable / sustainable variety, unlike houses!) and the education / training necessary to support those, and the whole arts / computers / visual media thing keeps getting mentioned a lot ... I was just curious to see what the first thing to strike an actual film student's head would be! Can't say I was expecting what you did come up with ... which is a positive thing, if you think about it!! :D

Oh, and an absolute randomer ... opinions of Pedro Almodóvar's films? ... seeing as you mention Del Toro (wonderful surname, I can haz?)

Far too much talk about what people would do and not near enough action on their part. If I had a euro for every time someone told me how they have this great idea but no one to fund it I would be able to make my own version of Avatar. People will tell you about how difficult it is to make something yet all around the world inventive film makers are pumping out low-budget gems which trade in ideas, something which Irish film making is sorely lacking.

I see it every day in class, people constantly talking about the things they would like to do and never doing a damn thing about it. I wanted to do a doc on John Connolly awhile back and when I told people most laughed and said there wasnt a chance in hell he would do it. A few weeks later and I'm sitting across from the man himself.

I do like Almodovar though like Woody Allen he's one of those directors whose films I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to see. I will watch one of their films if it comes on or someone puts it on my hard drive. Watched Volver a few weeks back and really enjoyed it and Broken Embraces was equally good. Embraces is one of the most visually stunning films I've seen in a long time.

"Well, what do you wanna hear, man? Do you wanna hear that sometimes I think about eatin' a bullet? Huh? Well, I do! I even got a special bullet for the occasion with a hollow point, look! Make sure it blows the back of my goddamned head out and do the job right! Every single day I wake up and I think of a reason not to do it! Every single day! You know why I don't do it? This is gonna make you laugh! You know why I don't do it? The job! Doin' the job! Now that's the reason! "

I don't think anyone could have prevented it but the sensible thing to have done during the boom would have been to plan for the worst and invest accordingly.

I think a pool woman though tbh I don't think it would matter a damn, rewatched Ultraviolet awhile back and damn she was smoking hot. The things I would do to that woman.

Depends on what form of zombie, we talking Romero's ghouls, 80s Italian variant or perhaps Dean Cain in Dead and Deader? I'd I could choose which I'd go with Dean Cain type, get to quote numerous movies while at the same time blowing away other more potent zombies. Spooky as hell but just after looking up from my computer to see Dean Cain in bloody Law and Order SVU.

Favourite take away meal, 3 in 1 with cashew nuts and fried noodles.

I have a few hundred rare as hell films I've put on DVD myself, Charlie my Darling the rarely seen Rolling Stones documentary and Shadow on the Land, neither of which has been shown in years and were believed lost for years. I also have the original cut of Gigli and Heavens Gate.

Couldn't agree more, in general, and it's endemic, not just in the 'film world'. In fairness, though, these are people who are sitting down with us to 'imagineer' (as Disney would say! :D) new / updated courses in all sorts of areas, and are generally people who are doing, or at least trying hard, in their respective sectors.
I don't think anyone could have prevented it but the sensible thing to have done during the boom would have been to plan for the worst and invest accordingly.
True, but not leaving all sorts of tax incentives which were meant to 'kickstart' re-development of urban / rural areas in place for years and years until they simply served to fuel the ever-growing bubble ... simply to please their developer cronies ... would have been a help. As would banking regulation which was more than a rubber stamp, nod nod wink wink job!!

Anyway ... this is turning into a conversation, my bad! :o

    4. Poor 3D conversion
    5. Adaptations which slavishly follow the source material

Though I view Lord of the Rings as one film it seems I'm in the minority and when considered a trilogy it would easily be my favourite. Just a perfect film, every aspect was crafted with care and love and it's obvious that it was made by fans for fans. One of the few films which could be watched every day and each time be loved just as much.

I don't hate the prequel trilogy and find it a little sad when 40 year old men moan about how it's too childish forgetting that they saw the original trilogy when they were children. I have my problems with it, the story is rather poor and it was a blatant attempt to make money on Lucas's part but at the end of the day I own all 3 films on DVD and will watch them again.

Spiderman 1 and 2 are classics while the third is mediocre as hell. I've watched parts 1 and 2 a dozen times each but only managed one viewing of part 3. The Blu Ray and DVD have been tempting me for years but I don't think I can suffer dancing, emo Peter Parker.

    Dear Darko.

Leon is the best film ever. That's not a question though.

Given the self destructive nature of human kind, the finite nature of the universe and the uncertaintity and instability of the global economy, which do you prefer, blonds or redheads?

PS. I still have that picture of you and Spongebob Squarepants.

Leon is a truly amazing film, shame though that the Blu Ray wasnt as good as it could have been. Really would have liked a little more care and attention spent on the sound mix aswell as picture.

I have to pick red heads, my gf reads the forum and were she to see me choose blonde I got a feeling that my proposed Ghost in the Shell Blu Ray may never materialise.

I must see that picture, was thinking about it not a week ago.

We'd hardly break up over comments posted here but she may well make my Ghost in the Shell Blu Ray box set disappear and after waiting years to re watch it in the best possible manner that's punishment enough.

Japan or America. America simply because of the job opportunities on offer to someone who wants to make film. Japan is self-explanatory, it's freakin Japan. I've always wanted to live there though my dreams of being a wandering samurai may never materialise.

Really can't think of anything too embarrassing tbh, I'm sure there are some and as soon as I think of one I'll report back.

    1. The one whose poo is searched through in the first Jurassic Park. :)

    2. The Eden Project, Megashark Vs Giant Octopus, 10 Million BC, God there are so many trashy dinosaur featuring B movies I enjoy it's hard to keep track.

    3. Not particularly, it's a franchise which no longer gets me excited. There is so much potential but you just know that it's going to be a missed opportunity. I would much prefer a Cadillacs and Dinosaurs film than 3 more Jurassic Park films.

    4. Dinosaurs with guns, that or I would go back to the beginning and create a film which relied on suspense rather than attempts at awe-inspiring effects. 2 decades ago the first film was ground breaking but with everything that has happened since the awe is no longer there. If i had the money to do a Jurassic Park film I would instead buy the rights to Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and get Steve De Souza to write the script, he did a damned good job with the show. That or a Dino Riders film.

    For a start:

I would love to see some Dean Koontz adapted, he's a great story-teller whose work is often mistaken for a lesser Stephen King. John Connolly's Charlie Parker novels could make superb films but he recently told me that he still holds the rights and doesn't want them adapted as he doesn't think they could be. Love to see a Harry Bosch film also.

I could list off about a thousand books, games, comics which I would love to see adapted but would quickly grow tired of doing so and begin moaning baout the lack of quality cinematic adaptations.

Definelty great story with poor effects though I will admit that an amazing looking film with a poor story can be appreciated. If I'm going to see a summer blockbuster such as Transformers 2 I will forgive a poor story if the action and effects are top-notch as after all I know exactly what I'm getting before paying in.

Nah, I'm used to it at this stage. Most of my friends are big into film so conversations where we discuss the best Italian sci fi of the mid 80s are common.
