Discovery Channel:Extreme Engineering.

Just a heads up for those interested, there's a new series of Extreme engineering started on the Discovery channel. The first episode is about NASA,just finished watching it and i'd highly recommend it. It's mainly about the future of space exploration, focussing on Ares(),a new Lunar rover and ISS construction. Some great footage of Endeavour rolling over to the VAB,getting ready to be hoisted up,Discovery being towed back to the OPF,Ares 1-X being stacked, the shuttle motion simulator and lots of other stuff.

It's being repeated on Sunday at 16.00!

Yea it wasnt bad. Sad to watch though in many ways. So much of the cool stuff of the past, to be replaced with piecemeal technology.

Funny the other thing that struck me watching the moon buggy, was my thoughts that what actually had a major effect on restricting future manned space flight was ironically the 60's moon landings. The rush to beat the USSR meant it was a one off, one shot deal. It was amazing, but held us back longterm IMHO. Add in the "we've done that" aspect too.

No wonder so many think it was faked. It is unreal to them from todays standpoint.

The strange thing watching it is that a lot of what was talked of as the future has been canned since by the Obama administration. And it was only filmed last summer!!

Nope. They are going absolutely nowhere.

And after the shuttle is retired this year they arent even going into space or low Earth orbit!!

Maybe in the very long term it is the best decision to make but in terms of short to medium term space flight it is going to be a desert for the forseeable future.

We are relying on Burt Routan and Virgin Galactic to develop the next technology.

Officially, yes,NASA have scrapped Constellation based on the budget and guidelines that've been handed to them by the Obama administration. The budget is going through Congress at the moment but whether that means a change of budget/long term plan for NASA is anyones guess right now.

Space programs

Not sure weather this has ever been mentioned but the absolute best space series ever was BBC's "The Planets". There a litle dated now but very very worth the watch if you havent allready...

RIP constellation. Perhaps they'll focus on unamanned missions now. Perhaps the Europa underwater probe is a possability?
