I just filled out the CAO and earth and ocean science was my first choice. but im concerned beacause i dont do chemistry or higher level maths. does anyone know if this will really affect me? i do geography nd biology which im doing well in.

Hi lisa, i'm a 3rd year eos student. I started off in environmental science then moved to eos in second year. Not sure now but you might have a choice whether to do chemistry or not, I think the first years 3 years ago did anyway. I only did Ag science and geography for the LC, which to be honest was a disadvantage, If your good at geography it really helps with the eos actual subject in first year. Higher maths would a help for applied maths and physics, i did physics in first year its not too bad, passable anyway and there is loads of tutorials and the like to help. Biology is interesting and its something that is understandable, the practicals are interesting and you can get good grades in them if you work a bit. I found chemistry very hard cause i had no backround in it, so perhaps try and get a mate to give you help during the summer with that. I really think chemistry is one subject where it is important to have a previous knowledge in. Overall eos is very interesting and is a good degree to have, especially with all this climate change, global warming, floods, etc etc... The lecturers are decent and are very approachable. After 1st year, there's small enough classes as well which is good. Well thats my rant over, if you have any more questions, let us know.

I'm a First yr in NUIG doing EOS, its a really good course,
For the Leaving Cert I did Geography and Chemistry. Doing Geog is a big help! As for not doing Chemistry dont worry because you have a choice of subjects to pick from when you go into first year from: Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths and Computer Science. All these are taught from scratch as if you have never done any of them, and I should also mention you pick 3 from the above list. If you pick Maths dont worry the course is split into hounors and pass. I did pass Maths for the leaving cert and I find it very manageable, so I wouldnt worry if I were you!! All the Lecturers are very nice and approachable! If you do pick EOS have fun, its a really enjoyable course!! =D

Hey! Thanks a million for all that! im still not so sure if id be able to pick three from that list dat id be comfortable with!! seems like id be out of my depth! How are the class sizes? is it possible to move from enviromental science to EOS . its my second choice you see... Thanks!

I moved from Environmental to EOS. As long as you pass first year and have enough points for the cao requirements there shouldn't be a problem.

I moved cause I didn't want to do chemistry for 3 years in environmental. You'll be in with general science in first year for most of your subjects so there could be 300 of ye in say biology, but after 1st year your usually in with your own EOS class, and depending what subjects you pick a couple more from marine science and general science too.

They'll be between 15 and 45 probably in your classes, we'll there is in mine and i'm in 3rd year.

Well to be honest, I was a little our of my depth when I first started because i chose to do chemistry physics and maths and the physics was a little over my head but the tutorials are brilliant and they go at a pace that suits everyone so really you'll be fine, theres always help if you need it!

so does this mean il only have to do chem. in first year and drop it completly afterwords? well as long as i pass?? Also is there any PLCs that could lead into EOS? Im worried about the points and im really just lukin at back up plans!! also whats computer science like? Have ye very long hours? Like 9 to 5 everyday?

Programming in Python (Google it), basic electronic engineering, etc. Pretty basic stuff.

Most First-Year courses are about 20-25.

Fourth year speaking here. Basically its the same as all 1st year science. About twenty ish- plus maybe 1 or two tutorials if you need help with things (I'd say go to them anyway, its a good way to get things into your head). anyway any more question, just ask.
