Girl's letter to Ray Darcy show today...

did anyone hear the letter that was read out on the Ray Darcy show this morning? It was from a girl whos father had to close his business and lay off 8 people because of ill health (lymphoma). The family were forced to sell of their cars and other stuff related to the business to cover health care costs... then, unexpectedly the Revenue Commissioners sent him a bill detailing money that they felt he still owed. With no means of income, the family gathered together whatever they could to cover the bill and they fell short by 1,000... so the revenue were sent around to the house (after days of continuous phone calls and threatening letters), and started to help themselves to items from the family home. When the family tried to intervene, the Gardai were called in to prevent the revenue from carrying out their 'work'.... shortly after, this girl's dad died suddenly of a heart attack; it would be a safe bet to assume that it was stress related.

WHAT SORT OF A F**KING COUNTRY HAS THIS PLACE TURNED INTO?!

This might seem like a stupid question, but why didn't he pay his taxes?

Sounds like he didn't pay the VAT.

I saw a recent UK Dragons Den episode, where the Dragons said there's two people you always have to pay... your doctor and the VAT man.

The VAT / revenue have the power to confiscate goods.

Well he wasnt a banker or a TD so the revenue told him he had to pay them himself.

It looks like he paid them and just owed a bit more then he thought. As a owner of a small business its easy enough to make the mistake. Then catch up when its brought to your attention. However in this case the poor man hadn't got the chance.

I heard it, did anyone hear the head of the revenue on? What a Dcik...

We are supposedly a welcoming warm race of people. The treatment people are receiving when they are in dire situations is nothing short of disgusting.

What the fuk are you on about? Our social welfare is so good, it's strangling the country's finances.

And how can we have sympathy for a man who didn't pay taxes when he was able to, got called up on it afterwards when he couldn't pay and then his whole family/relations had to try help him cover it.

He's a tool for letting that happen.

not being heartless or anything but if he paid his taxes the revenue wouldnt come around. I doubt they came around for 1,000 anyway.

My dad has his own business and we have never had a vist from the Revenue. despite the tough times the business is currently going through the taxman has to be paid.

LOL, the revenue did not call around to his house. The revenue would have referred his case to the sheriff's office after giving them repeated warnings to settle his bill. If they had talked to the revenue earlier, and sorted out a payment scheme this wouldn't have happened. I have seen companies in the same position, and it takes along time before it reaches this stage.

The sheriff's office don't care about sob stories they hear them all the time, and have no idea which ones are real and which ones are fake. There job is recoup the money owed, thats it.

I also like how the company had to close because of ill health. Eh no the company had to close because it was going down the crappier, evidence by the taxes not being paid, and the fact the other eight employees were not able to run the business on their own. Also sounds like they sold the business down the river to pay for the health bills.

Maybe he should have paid his taxes, maybe he should have kept open communication with the revenue, maybe he should have got health insurance. Maybe the family should look at who was really responsible for the "stress" that caused the death,

I agree with Frada...

Are we supposed to bend the law for this guy because he had a daughter who could write or something?

It sounds like a pretty sh1tty situation allright,
But it probably could have been avoided by not trying to cheat the tax man.

Brought it on themselves imo.
