Job Title, what should it be

Right, I'm in a bit of a pickle on what to have as my Job Title.

I am currently filling one of those all encompassing roles in a small company. We have seriously downgraded our personnel of late and I am basically now second in command below the CEO.

I have numerous responsibilities, but Development Manager, Product Manager, Project Manager, Program Manager, Business Development, Sales etc all spring to mind.
Development is pretty much at a halt right now, so my main role is in getting and keeping business. The CEO would get introductions etc and I would follow up. I am also in charge of negotiations and planning etc.

Currently my title is IT Manager, but I want to change this. If, when, the company starts to grow again I would not be in that role. I would be hiring someone to fill it. I am much more suited, and inclined, towards the business end.
I have been advised to seek to get officially put down as Senior Management / Executive, or at least Project Management etc.

What do ye think?

gun for "VP of Operations" or "Chief Operations Officer" if you are that close in the chain to the CEO.

depends on the size of the company, and it's prospects for survival. Don't let your ego get in the way. Taking too big a title without renumeration to match might leave you in conflict should their be a liquidation, and potentially held to task when not your fault. Something like business development manager should suffice.

In some cases in a small company, the owner / director / person responsible for the company, if persued over debts of the company, may use the excuse of blame to deflect their debts, if you take on the director title, you may be deemed responsible for knowing the day to day runnings of the company, and complicit in any wrong-doing. Even if not actually a director with the CRO, this would be known as a 'shadow director'. In my view, he should look for senior manager as a title, if you are not a director, there is no need to make out you are one.
