buying a car puzzled?

my mother wants to buy a car for around 14000 must be diesel no more then 1.6 and preferably 09 or 08 any suggestions welcome.

There's no necessary advantage to limiting yourself by engine size under the new motor tax regime. A larger engined car could be in a lower tax band and more economical. If she's insistant on it, then start here

Personally I would recommend the Octavia or another really nice car to drive is the hyundai i30 diesel. Both cars would be only €156 per year to tax at the moment.

+1 for Skoda, I found a Superb here. It may be a bigger engine but that's what my money would be on.

Just pay extra attention to the condition of the car as that dealer also has a large rental company. The car looks like an ex hire car so it could have been prone to some abuse in that time, make sure you get a mechanic to check it and makes sure things like the clutch, gearbox and brakes are not on the way out.
