Tyre question for W210 E320 (petrol)

Just a quick question.

Was going to a couple of places to get tyre quotes.

Tyres currently on the car are 205/55/16 and got a few quotes.

However when I pitched into Fast Fit, the guy said I have the wrong tyres and it should be 215 rather than 205 (which works out a good bit dearer).

Is there much of a difference between the 2 as frankly if the 205 are ok then I would rather save the money, and afterall, have had these "wrong" tyres on the car for the last couple years since I got the car (from a mercedes garage too!).

Thanks!

That profile is perfectly fine. The factory spec is 215/55. So while the Fast Fit guy was technically right you are safe enough.

What is the actual difference though.

I see that say for example the E200 now should have 205 tyres. IS it because bigger engine ie faster acceleration that it recommends the wider tyres?

For every day driving assuming I aint a boy racer, will there be no difference?

Also, breaking in an emergency, will it be the same safety?

It would cause a small difference in rolling radius but not enough to worry about speedo reading wrong.
I would check to make sure that the tyre safe loading & speed rating are at least equal to that of the specified tyre.

Edit:

Try camskill.co.uk for the 215 tyres and add about €60 max for fitting all 4. See if it beats fast fit!

Oops! No difference to rolling radius if the profile (55) is the same.....

Ooooops yourself! Have another look. 55 profile means 55% of the tyre width.
Apologies accepted gracefully (sometimes)

the smaller tyres will also have a lower load rating. i.e they are disigned to carry a lower weight.
could have insurance implications (modified?)
i would put on the correct tyres. The guys in merc when designing the car did not pull the recommended spec from the air.
