Upgraded to 10.6 and now have to wait for everything.

Hi,

I recently UPGRADED to 10.6 and while it ran fine for a couple of days the machine just ground to a pedestrian speed. Spinning wheels happen every time I launch any application. Apple released Perfrmance Update 1.0 a couple of days ago for affected machines, but this seems to be firmware and doesn't apply to my machine.

Here's the basic info

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.10f2

I have had no problems with this so far. But since upgrading with Snow Leopard it's sloth like. Startup and ShotDown are fine, it's just general use is slow. Switching between apps, opening new windows, launching an app, sometimes drop down menus are slow to respond, and bookmarks in Safari on the Bookmarks Bar can take up to a minute to open.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I moved to Snow Leopard today. Exact same problem.

If you open the Activity Monitor you will find that the % CPU given to the user is very low. In my case it is about 3% !!!!!!!

I don't know the answer yet.

Okay, just to narrow it down:

Create a new user account (in System Prefs > Accounts), then temporarily login under it and see if the problem remains.

I know that the minimum requirement of RAM for Snow Leopard is 1gb but maybe you would need more for a faster performance.

I wonder how other users with 1gb RAM are getting on.

I have 4 GB of RAM so that is not the problem.

Open Activity Monitor and click on the CPU column so all processes are ordered by highest CPU usage. See if you can identify a specific process that is misbehaving.
