Here's a puzzler for you!

I was quite a semi-regular poster on these forums for a few years now but hadn't been able to post anything easily up until a couple of days ago.

Two years ago, I moved house and also changed my ISP. Got a wireless router with the deal. But for some reason, now, I wasn't able to connect my laptop or desktop to boards.ie through the router. If I took my laptop to work, I could access boards.ie no problem so I put the problem down to my router. I contacted my ISP and they told me it wasn't the router and they had not been blocking boards.ie either. So I continued to read boards but only through the mobile and posting was a pain in the behind.

That was until the weekend. My laptop crashed and I lost everything!! I tried to reinstall XP but as I didn't have a Restore Plus Kit, it would let me. I tried the only other Windows disc I had, Windows 98, but it was no good either. So, I went to my desktop and downloaded Linux Ubuntu. Installed in on to a flash drive and plugged it into the USB of my laptop. Installation was successful and I now had a working OS on my laptop again.

So yesterday, while browsing the net and adding some bookmarks, I thought I'd look up boards.ie again. It came up in a flash!! Everything was there again and I can post again. Great!!! It's great to be back.... but..... what was the problem??? I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Any ideas??

Kind of hard to analyze the problem retroactively, but my best guess would be that you somehow had an incorrect entry for boards in your 'hosts' file.

Solar flares. That'd be my guess.

A MicroSoft conspiracy, without doubt.

I didn't get an error. It took about 5 minutes for it to come up and then it was in an extremely basic format with no graphics, no menu (at the top) and all text was standard blue link and Roman Times font. When I clicked on a link, I'd have to wait another five minutes.

It was the same story whether I used Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome. Didn't matter which I used. They were all the same.
