connecting asus laptop to tv

Hi, i know there are loads of threads on this subject, So aplogies for starting another one. I have a asus laptop of the x58l series. I have a pc grand view 2
which is a box that allows me to watch videos stored on laptop or on external hds on my crt tv. As well as the vga connection it has connections for rgb, composite video, ( it only has the yellow connection), and s-video. Now there is a switch on the side which gives me the oppurtunity to watch either through rgb or video. If I choose Rgb, i get no picture, it works fine with video though.
Although if i remember correctly when i got this first, rgb would give me a green picture.
So what's yer problem? you ask.
Well i also have a desktop computer and another tv. The computer which is a medion mt6 and the tv which is a crt beko model sn71b6 have a lot more connections. Although I still only seem to be able to connect in the same way as for the laptop. The front of the tv has red, white and yellow composite slots, and an s video slot. The back has two scart connections and a red and white composite, I have tried connecting pc to tv through s video slot on tv and s video slot on desktop. it doesn't work When i go into graphic properties it doesn't show any sign of recognising an external moniter. ....I've just tried the pc grand view box with desktop and tv. It works fine, but display properties doesn't say anything about second moniter.
Of course I could just bring the pc grand view from one room to the other, but I'd rather not have to do that.
today, or yesterday now i guess, i tried vga to scart connecter on both laptop, and desktop (seperately, i hasten to add) although cable said hdd and perhaps other words too. it didn't work. the laptop recognised that an external moniter was connected I also bought a component cable red, green, blue on the off chance that might work.
I connected it to a scart adapter with slots for composite cables, I've tried
each component lead in the yellow composite slot, but no picture on either
desktop or laptop. Once again the laptop did recognise that an external moniter was connected.
At the moment I'm thinking of getting either another pc grand view box or a pc to tv box from maplins, unless someone has a better suggestion from the information I've provided.
Sorry for the way this was written. I can understand if people have a problem understanding what the hell I'm on about.

ON a laptop ,you have to TURN ON external vga out,usually by clicking fn plus a function key ,eg f5 or f7 ,function key will have a square box/tv logo on it.
SET res to 720x576 ,search boards ie pc to tv .
or try display propertys advanced options select second display ,set tv out pal b if you are using the svideo out connector.
Google connect pc to tv svideo.SEE HERE www.svideo.com
if you set res too high you,ll damage the tv, set refresh rate at 60megahertz.

if you want sound get a 3.5mm to 2 rca audio cable maplins 4 euro approx,3.5 cable goes to pc laptop line out green connector.
