Motor Tax

Hiya,

this is a bit more complicated so let me explain!

Something went wrong with my Registration Cert for my car. The previous owner sent it to Shannon but they have never received it. I thought it will cost a fortune to go to the commissioner of oaths and all that. Well, but in the end I went last week and I received my Cert yesterday which is great!

Now the main thing. You cant get your car taxed without not showing the Cert right? My motor tax on my car is out of date since the end of June. So that is 3 months ago now and I need to get it taxed again so I can drive safe on the road without not having in mind I could be stopped by the Gardà. Could I just not say the car was off the road from June until. September? I wasnt the owner anyway...
If not how much would it cost me to pay the overdue tax?

Cheers!

You'll only be asked to pay tax from the date of change of ownership on the cert for starters.

You can also easily acquire a form from the Guards saying the car was off the road. If it actually was on the road and they catch you out, expect a hefty fine... but realistically I don't think they ever persue this.

Arrears are charged at 10% a month IIRC, so June's tax would be 130% of the normal rate, July's 120% and so on.

Only the date of change of ownership on the cert? Thats perfect! So that means I dont have to pay July and August at all right? Because the date of that Cert is yesterdays date so I would start only paying for October on am I right?

You have to pay for all of September too. Tax goes on calendar months, no fractional basis unfortunately.

September won't be classed as in arrears though, I think.

Oh that alright then! I think it is €150 for 3 months isnt it but I think it is cheaper to pay for 6 months I have been told.

You pay more for the 3 months than the 6 when you work out what it costs per month; and the same for 6 compared to 12. If you've got the cash to pay 12 in advance, pay it.

Nah I wont have the money for 12 months but I do have the money for 6. I go to Tax office on Monday and get that sorted and then I can finally driver around safe. So happy! 6 months is perfect anyway as my NCT is running out next March you know.

3 months is 28.25% of annual rate;
6 months is 55.5% of annual rate.

not correcting, just clarifying
