hey lads and ladies, in July i cycled from ballymahon along the royal canal to Dublin, and as i was cycling it gave me an idea to maybe start up a grand canal cycle, as far as i know it is alot better than what i endured on the royal canal, no cars, no fumes, just fresh air, so as from tonight im gonna organize a children's charity cycle, now i know there are alot that love to cycle and wish to get out and really put their bikes to use,
So on a Saturday morning Rain or shine we will start from Shannon Harbor, making our way along the tow path to halfway Edenderry, i could do the whole canal in a 12hours less but it will be an open book on the type of cyclists who come along to this fundraiser, this cycle will be filmed as a 10mins feature and uploaded to various sites such as YouTube, it will be winter as you know, but arnt we lucky not to be in hospital for 2009 xmas season, so bring proper weather wear, SOMETIME NOVEMBER so after you contact me with your details, you will receive an information pack detailing our route intended, our rest stops intended, a what bike is best to use, and a what to bring info page, and a sponsor card with 10 lines at 5 euro a line, with the amount of bikes being sold in the new scheme this give you a change to use it, and for very good reasons, PLEASE NOTE RACERS CANT BE ENTERED 16 YEARS PLUS 8-10MPH AVERAGE SPEED IS REQUIRED RELIABLE BIKE A MUST so lads and ladies show the children of Ireland your support and join the GRAND CANAL CHILDREN'S CHARITY CYCLE please send me your mail to my inbox, thank you, organizer Andrew B Mockler |

ps
after Edenderry we will make our way to Dublin Grand Canal Dock, it is a 131km cycle so an over night stay in Edenderry will be on the cards depending on the type of cyclists that turn out, at the moment i have alloted 50 places, but if demand grows i will add more places as the demand grows

I'm up for this. PM sent. I'm sure a few on here would take on the challenge of doing it in one day.
Whats the ideal bike and tyre choice for the canal? I plan to do some of it in the near future? |

There's a charity mountain bike cycle from Athy to Kill (Kildare) along the Grand Canal taking place this Saturday in aid of Saplings School for Autistic Children. Starts around 9.30am total distance 64km- €30 entry fee and BBQ at the end.
I'll get the organisers to post details of it here if anyone is interested. dc |

Great to see the canals attracting bikes. The route from Ferbane to Tullamore is across the bog and is a wonderful wilderness. The raised area from the tunnel bridge ( Rathangan RD, Edenderry to Lowtown) offers a great view over the midlands. Some feat of engineering to build such massive embankments.
Best of luck to all. Sorry I have to work saturdays. could try to make the sunday bit. |
