Did you complete a change of ownership form when buying the car? If so you should have recieved the Registration Form (Log Book, Tax Book) in your name. If not you need to get on to the Motor Tax Office and verify that the car is in your name. If it's not, get onto that dealer immediately.

If you have difficulty getting the dealer to organise the registration certificate ('tax book') for you, you can get a form to request a new certificate in any Garda station which you fill out and have witnessed by the Garda on duty, then send it to Shannon (the address should be on the form). The fee for this is €12.
When you eventually get the certificate, do not give it to your friend! Get him or her to fill in his details on the certificate, then you both sign and date it. You then send it to Shannon. They will then send a new certificate to the new owner. If you just give it to your friend, you run the risk of being responsible for speeding offences, parking tickets etc. until the car is registered in your friend's name. |
