The Witcher - White Wolf
Do you know this game? It's polish production from 2007 I think. Whole Witcher's world is fascinating - monsters, elves, dwarfs, and many, many more. It's good story with one of the best fantasy character ever created.

Hi OP,
I'm not very familiar with computer games (thankfully- otherwise I would be bug-eyed glued 24/7), so can you elaborate a bit about the characters/ plot/aim in this story game? It kind of sounds a bit Tolkien, saxon-norse mythology at an outside guess. Which of course is ancient Irish tradition also, considering their pantheon and mythology have been around for long time in this country. |

The game is based on the book series of the same name by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher takes place in a medieval fantasy world and follows the story of Geralf of Rivia, one of a few remaining witchers—traveling monster hunters for hire, gifted with unnatural powers.
The game tells the story of Geralt, who at the opening of the game is tasked to cure the daughter of King Foltest of a curse which causes her to transform into a feral monster. Geralt successfully cures her, introducing the player to the nature of witcher-work. A period of years mysteriously passes, ending with Geralt being transported to the witcher stronghold of Kaer Morhen by fellow witchers who had discovered him unconscious in a field. Geralt remembers almost nothing of his life before returning to Kaer Morhen. The game's story is separated into five acts, each representing a different area and distinct set of quests. Geralt meets many former friends and foes throughout the plot who help him to recover information about his mysterious past. Through the storyline, Geralt discovers that he had died five years earlier while attempting to defend an oppressed group of non-humans from a racist mob. He also learns that he is actually a renowned witcher referred to in prose as "The White Wolf." Source: www.wikipedia.com |

Here's the gist of what I got from going on a wikipedia quest of links:
Authour particularly influenced by slavic mythology and Polish history. There seems to be a strong connection with Finnish and Estonian mythology, as well as on myriad interpretations of the ancient norse cult of Woden/Odin, with a focus on the Loki trickster character. The whole interpretation of the werewolves mythology and legends is fascinating in every culture, in every tradition of Europe and world wide, however the story at the centre of this particular hero's quest is the history of 'damned if he does and damned if he doesn't' tragic hero -doomed to his fate by his bloodline in the eternal struggle between the polarities of 'good' and 'evil'. |

Bought the special game with the accompanying booklet. The game was pretty average but the storyline was very well written. My wife's Polish and she had already heard about him even though fantasy isnt her thing - apparently there was a biggish budget film of about Geralt made recently enough.
Unfortunately Andrzej Sapkowski's books arent generally translated into English - although there is one or two released in the past year or two from memory - but I only picked one up in Poland itself. It is the one with Geralt in it though. I think I've left it in Poland but its a series of semi-linked short stories about Geralt, and includes the story given at the start of the game about the striga. I'm in Poland Thursday so hope to bring the book back
