Being ripped off on games consoles tradeins really depends on how realistic you are about the price you'll get.
You'll never get even close to the secondhand value of the machine, not a hope, the shop has to add their own profit to it, so you will get substantially less than what you'll get if you sell it on, say, adverts.ie.
The other way to make a few bob, especially if youa re after another machine, is to watch out for certain deals the shops do, especially Gamestop and Game, whereby they give quite good rates for trading in your console against another, newer one.
They did it for the DS Lite and the PS3, as far as I remember.

But, by and large, you will get the best return for your console on adverts or similar, I know it's a little more trouble but it may well be worth it.

They wont rip you off as badly as when you trade games in (got quite a good price for my 360 just before they dropped in price), but you would still be much better off using adverts.ie
