Micrometers
Hi
I'm wondering where one can purchase micrometers on the street. I am looking for a specific type, however. It is approximately 35mm in length, and has a range of 0-5mm. There is no surrounding brace like a standard micrometer, in the rough shape of a 'C'. Basically, as you adjust your length, the head of the micrometer goes back and forth. I don't have a model number. Thanks, Kev

I don't know what actual shops you could buy a micrometer in but they are for sale on farnell's website (farnell.com). You should be able to set up an account with them. Failing that, radionics probably sell them.
Hope this helps. |

I can't speak for those in Ireland, but when I was starting my trade, I bought all of my micrometers from pawn shops. They are usually kept in locked cupboards, and you will have to ask the staff to have a close look at them.
Check them for obvious signs of damage, run the thread up and down through it's full range feeling for tight spots etc. Once you are happy with it you may be able to haggle about the price a little. I still have my selection which cost me significantly less than purchasing new ones. All good brands P&N, Starrett or whatever. There are some good bargains out there so long as you know the actual value of what you are looking at and it helps to talk nicely to the man behind the counter. He would put things aside for me if I told him what I was looking for. |
