Dyspraxia

I think I may have it but I'm unsure.(Sorry for the poor spelling your about too read, but hey if I do then you cant blame me )

Im a 17 year old 5th year student and I seem to have several things listed to it.
I'm generally terrible at languages((Except English besides the spelling and punctuation)),When I went for Irish grind the guy told me that It's like I've never done Irish before.I have poor memory for formulas(But Id say thats more to do with study nearly),I'm very very clumsy,I'm always tripping on sidewals,as in my foot always goes off and I trip up a little and I've once been told by my friend that when I enter a room things just suddenly fall off *L*.I've a bad posture, very poor handwritting and often get cramps when doing so.I'm terrible at throwing and catching balls,I often drop things and so fort.

How ever I apparently I started talking at 6 months old,I was Ambidexteris till I was about 4 and I'm fairly average at most subjects,I'm also very imaginative and quite creative.I've taken up Japanese for the LC dropping Spanish and I seem to learn this much easier than I have with Irish or spanish, but I am learning this on my own time and reciving grinds in it aswell.

I've taken some of those online assements and all of them said That I more than likely have it and should get it checked out,but then again if you look up headaches on the internet it will nearly tell you that you have some tropical disease.Just to give you an example of how bad I am at Irish,in first year myself adn another where the two worst in the class, however the other actually went on to become better at it then me,And then it turns out he's dyslexic.

So...Um yeah any opinions or thoughts... and again sorry for the spelling.

edit-I thought I should mention that I daydreamed allot when I was a kid,so much so that my 1st/2nd class teacher ask my parents to get a hearing tests done on me.

The main thing is you shouldn't self-diagnose. If you're genuinely concerned, go see a professional. Your GP should be able to advise you on where to go etc. Doing web assessments and that sort of thing will not get you anywhere.

Why is there such a tendency for people needing to 'label' everything? Far too many pseudo disorders if you ask me.

P.s. I am refering to the general here, not necessarily 'dyspraxia', as I know little about this disorder.

Special needs teachers have a big section in their guide book type-of-thing on Dyspraxia, I saw it today. Don't know anything about it though.

What you have described could fit the description of a number of different difficulties, dyspraxia being one. If you are looking for a definitive diagnosis, you would need to be seen by a psychologist, occupational therapist and possibly a speech and language therapist.

Here is a good link for Dyspraxia / DCD in children and here is one for adults

(both are taken from Irish sources)

Dont worry too much about it.I have it, its not really a big deal. One thing though, you say that you are bad at languages and cant remember maths formulae.I dont think that has anything to do with dyspraxia as I am good at those things. To tell you the truth I dont know much about it so if I am wrong please correct,im not being a smart arse

There is an excellent book on the subject written by Dr Amanda Kirby and titled "Dyspraxia".

Definately worth reading. She is a recognised expert on the topic and its a very easy book to read.

You certainly have many of the characteristics but armchair diagnosis is notoriously unreliable.

If you do have it, work with it rather than against it. My partner takes charge of all the paperwork when we travel. I recently lost the keys of a hire car, 2 minutes after I was given them Luckily my partner was able to find them

Also take a look at yoru family. It can be hereditary.

Good luck, sounds like you had to struggle with your work for a long time and I really hope that you get some support.

There's no doubt that we don't need to label everything but where there is a functional impairment its important its recognised and something is done about it.

It'd be interesting to hear how you get on Seloth and what the experience of assessment is like from the other side if you were interested in sharing with us.

How did you go about getting the assessment? My younger sister has had serious problems for years and has never been successfully diagnosed. I believe the majority of the problems correspond to a 'typical' case of dyspraxia and would like to help her get some sort of definitive answer.

Any idea what kind of help is in place in Ireland for sufferers?
