Barcelona didn't have anybody sent off when they clearly should have and van Persie was sent off harshly in my opinion. Diaby was lucky with the tackle on Messi, but Messi had lost control of the ball and kicked it away from goal. Kos could very easily have gotten a 2nd yellow. What's your call on Abidal?

It's all ifs and buts now because nobody knows what would have happened if Messi got that peno, if Van Persie was'nt sent off if Kos got the second and if the ref seen Abidal. |

A definite improvement in Barca's performance over recent weeks. I thought that the closing down play was absolutely immense. RVP sending off was harsh - as Pep said himself afterwards. I would note though that even with 11 players for the first 60mins of the game Arsenal couldn’t get out of their own half. But the other side of the coin is that they were doing a great job defensively. Now, did losing RVP alter the game dramatically? I don’t believe it did, at least not defensively speaking. For one, Arsenal weren’t able to get the ball to RVP in the first place. Second, RVP wasn’t involved defensively for Arsenal; he was hanging around the centre-circle. Anytime Arsenal tried to either boot it or pass it upfield Barca simply kept closing them down and retaking possession.
Barca was constantly probing the Arsenal defence and eventually got thru. Messi's goal originated from Cesc's error but let’s not take away from Iniesta's pass and Messi's finish both of which were sublime. That goal originated from Barca's constant pressing which led to what it is designed to - a mistake, which was pounced on. As for the second, the build up for it was again simply dazzling. Was RVPs presence going to have made a difference - judging by how they were playing up to his dismissal I don’t see how anyone can say conclusively that it would have. As for people stating the referee helped Barca that is just pure farcical - Barca had a legitimate shout for a penalty tonight. Going back to the first leg Arsenal was awarded the benefit of the doubt with a suspect offside goal from Messi - Djourou also handled the ball in that same incident. To imply such, just flies in the face of what it is that team have achieved in the near last 3 seasons. Moving on, I was in truth a bit disappointed with Arsenal. I was hoping that they would show something similar to what they did in the first leg which impressed and as some Arsenal fans have pointed out they did not. Was that because they didnt try hard enough or because Barca didnt let them? I believe it the was latter. No matter what Arsenal could have done tonight I dont believe it would have garnered much success against the immense pressing display that was on show. In sum I believe the better team won the game and I am happy - but as we all know being the better does not always mean you necessarily emerge victorious. Barca above all knows this. Heres hoping for French opposition in the quarters

Great victory for the catalans tonight! Wooop wooop!
We were the better side over the two legs. The score line was a fair reflection of the efforts both sides contributed to what I think were probably, Barcelona's biggest challenges since Pep took over. Very impressed with Masch over the last two games. He injects a little bit of directness into Barca, by leaving out the link players (Xavi, Iniesta and Messi) and passing it to the player beyond them. He also made a good tackle to stop Bendtner from possibly scoring and sending Arsenal through. The players should be given two days off imo. With optional training the second day. The have earned it with the attidude they showed over past month. On to Seville next!! |

Abidal was interviewed on the pitch immediately after the match.
At the end of the interview he was asked who he wanted to play in the next round, he said 'Lyon, as it means Madrid won't have won.' Legend

![]() Of course he is good enough but I think he will stay for maybe 2 more seasons before coming to Barca. He has seen an improvement in his team and they can still get SOOO much better. |
