Mock Exam Corrections
I'm thinking of signing up to mark mock exams with either Exam Craft or DEB. I'll probably do CSPE as I marked them last Summer. Does anyone know what the pay is like and how many I would be expected to mark? Thanks

I haven't done it in three years but I think at the time I did in or around 300 before I got royally fed up and didn't take any more. That was mainly coz they were LC papers though and I was being so careful with them for a miserable average of €3 per paper. The rates might have changed since then though!
Considering doing it again this year and only doing JC-much easier to correct!!! |

I think the rates are pretty much the same now.
If you know any CSPE teachers in other schools you might be better off asking them if they need someone to correct. You'd make more money out of it too. |

Ok thanks. I think I'd only want around 200 or so, would they let me do that many? Did it take you long to get paid for them? Is the process similar as for the State Exams Commission in terms of going to collect them, sending them in the post etc? Thanks!

They used to post them out to me and I'd post them back, so pretty much the same as the State Exams, just no initial collection.
I don't think it took too long for them to send out the cheque for payment and if I remember correctly they didn't deduct tax or anything back then. Think that may have changed now though-open to correction on this! About only doing about 200.....I know I had only wanted to do that amount when I corrected and told the company so but they still sent me out more so I felt obliged to do them. Now I'm not saying that would be common-place, it's just something that happened to me. If I do decide to do it this year I'll be making it very clear that I intend to do no more than a certain number! |

I've corrected for DEB for the last couple of years. I get about €2.50 a paper (LC Ag Science). That's after tax which is the figure they quote you. They are definitely paying tax on it because it came up on my tax cert last year. At least you know exactly what you are going to get out of it. It's up to you how many you correct per week. You put in your order over the phone or online between thursday and sunday, they post out the papers on monday and you have a week to correct and post back the following monday. all postage is prepaid. If you live in Dublin you collect the papers and drop them back. It's up to you how many you take on every week and when you're sick of it you can jack it in and send in your claim form to get paid. Cheque arrives in post a few weeks later.
I don't know how examcraft works but I assume it's something similar. |

I think the minimum they expect you to take a week is about 50... if they send out more than you ask for (and they did it to me several times, eg order 80, get 110) leave some of the envelopes uncorrected, attach a note saying you ordered 80, got 110 , remaining 30 uncorrected. They'll get the message. Towards the end when they are desperate to try and get the papers corrected they'll be ringing the whole time asking you to take more or putting extra in your order (probably doesn't happen to everyone, but I figured they only had about 2 correctors for ag science last year, so the pressure was on). Not your problem, it's up to them to get adequate numbers of correctors, not for you to take on more work than you want to. I state it in no uncertain terms in my online order now that any extra papers will be returned uncorrected. Seems to work

So DEB rang me today and they wont let me do it. I only have one years teaching experience post hdip and the woman said they only take people with 2 years experience.
I was good enough for the SEC last summer!! I wasnt doing it for the money (clearly) just for the experience. She said she'd keep me on file for next year, but I wont bother now. |

I can't believe that! I hope you told them you corrected for the SEC last year so you're obviously quite capable. Try examcraft instead if you're looking to correct to earn some extra money |

That's unbelievable! The standard of the correcting is woeful sometimes and they're turning down someone who did it for the SEC. For this, your correcting experience is worth way more than 10 years of teaching experience. They're idiots!

Agree - that's bananas. If you've been teaching 20 years and never corrected a state exam does that make you any more 'qualified' to correct the 'mocks'? I wouldn't do it, for the money it is exploitative, can't see that many teachers with reg hours doing it. I know it's not all about the money but still...

Just ask around in the school you are in. The older teachers are often dying to get someone to do the corrections without the hassle of sending them away. They'll prob give you 3eu a paper or more if they are cuttin out the middle man! Tedious but if you are subbing it will be really handy money.
