Good stuff. Any chance of linkage to an original article? I was looking at the Pitchfork top 100 of the year earlier today but this list looks more interesting :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,572 ✭✭✭DominoDub

Sorry can't give credit as it is wild on the web, someone must have copied it of the digital edition of the mag. The old charts can be found on the Wire's site

    or at http://www.rocklist.net/

That Gang Gang Dance album is fantastic

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

I literally have got only 5 off that entire list, and all in the reissues section I think. Tis a dangerous time to have money with all these lists flying about.

Btw Les Stances a Sophie by the Art Ensemble of Chicago is fantastic for those who like their experimental music with a good dollop of funk on top.

Here's the Pitchfork list, to whet your appetite a bit more :D

I have 9 of the main Wire list. I usually have more but this year their tastes seem to have diverged from mine a bit. A few entries there that are good albums but certainly not best of the year (Nick Cave, Philip Jeck, Harvey Milk). Don't know what's up with them.

I've 4 from the Pitchfork list and find their list even more bizarre. Lots of crap/mediocre/good but not great albums in there. Of course, most of them are "cool" pitchfork choices because they're so hip and all.

And in related news, the brainwashed end of year poll is open for nominations :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,373 ✭✭✭Executive Steve

i'm quite surprised at just how much of those i actually accumulated this year!

bit annoyed they put flying lotus in the "electronica" chart when it's hip hop to the core in my book - albeit quirky, wonky, textural and instrumental...

nice to see so much dubstep there, although there's some pretty odd choices - how "skreamizm" got on there and pangaea's "router" didn't is baffling...

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I bought The Bug album there last week to see what the fuss was about. It's OK but certainly not album of the year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

    Wait there's a Madvillainy 2? /googles It's just a remix album :(

Same here... maybe its because I'm not familiar with that sort of music but I failed to see what the big deal is.

Nice top 20 from Resident Advisor...

    http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature-read.aspx?id=998

Fully agree with their number 1 & 2, amazing albums. Some other gems in there too from during the year, very impressed with the latest from Kenny Larkin. Amazed though that Radio Scarecrow from the Black Dog didn't get a mention, probably my number 1 for 2008...

I subscribed to the Wire today - anyone else a subsriber?
how would you rate the mag?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I renewed my subscription a couple of months ago. I really like it but some people find it a bit wordy. Still, they're on the ball when it comes to great music.

Thanks guys you have just reminded me that mine is up in Feb ,,,ok now the Sterling rate is good !

Really enjoying the cds with the mag. The NZ "Dirt under the fingernails" has some great stuff as has the recent CD Pierre Petit and friends.
    Anyone else heard them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I never really think to listen to the free CDs. I'll probably spin the one with the latest issue as there's a few artists listed that I dig.
