Run faster, run longer, run stronger

OK, don't know how well I'll be able to keep this updated but I figure I'll probably work harder if I have people watching me.

The title of the log, is basically, my goals. After Dublin this year I'm planning on running Connemara so I'll definitely need to be stronger methinks. With hopefully a view to doing the Connemara Ultra in 2010. Ultra-running, is, I suppose, my long term goal...we'll see how that goes.

I got quite lazy during training for Dublin so am aiming to get my arse in gear after the marathon, maintain my fitness and get back to some weight training/core work as well.

Goals for 2009: Connemara, Edinburgh/Cork(actually so tempted to do both ) Longford(or some other August marathon) before rounding of 2009 with another shot at Dublin.

Went for my first proper post-marathon run yesterday. Covered somewhere between 8 and 10 miles in a little over an hour, I left the watch at home as I didn't want to time myself. Was doing some hills and found it easy enough so was very pleased with how it went.

Was at the gym this morning doing a bit of conditioning work...have been doing bits of weights and core work over the past two weeks. Doing out a programme for myself today so I can have something more structured to follow.

132 days to Connemara.

7 miles. First run since last Saturday. Hoping to get one in every day this week. Run was very comfortable and felt like I could have gone on for another 7, again, didn't take a watch, I'm still in the 'don't want to know my times mode' and I'm actually finding that I really enjoy running without a watch...instead of checking it every couple of minutes just out of habit I cna just keep going and concentrate on what my legs, core, lungs are doing. Can't wait till tomorrow, if I get a few in this week now I'll hopefully be back on track.

Hey mp1972 best of luck with the training, I've also found that I'm not as interested in looking at my watch as much, I spent 9 month training for the marathon looking at a watch every few minutes. Its like a sense of relief to not have to bother as much.

Somewhere around 10 miles tonight. May have overdone it a bit with the speed. Was out for a about an hour. Have really enjoyed the two runs this week. The post-marathon break made me hungry for running again and now I'm really enjoying my running again, I'm sure everyone can relate to the pre-marathon jitter and worries of "am I running enough" and feeling like you're too tired so take a rest one night and then feel guilty over it etc in the run up to the marathon, so it's great to be enjoying things again.

On a side note, ran in my kayano's yesterday and after about 4 miles felt like I was running over broken glass. My bestest friends in the whole world have died

R.I.P my darlings. We had some great times, we had some bad times. I'll never forget any of them.

Edit: I've received over €100 in sponsorship for Connemara already. No chickening out now.

6 miles tonight, 4 laps of my Chapilizod Hill - St. Laurences Road route. Wasn't the best run ever, have been getting awful pains in my abs when running, I first felt them in the Aware 10k, then last monday and thought it might have something to do with a bad fall of my bike, hadn't run since till tonight and was still feeling them. Anyway, had originally planned a 9 miler but as I came to the end of lap 4 thought it would be better to go home , have a rest and have a quality run tomorrow instead of a decent 6 miles and poor 3 miles today and another poor run tomorrow.

Less than 14 weeks to Connemara.

Note to self: Need new socks.

25/01/09 - Raheny 5
14/02/09 - Cupids Dash 10k
22/03/09 - Connemarathon
05/04/09 - Great Ireland Run(slowly)

19/04/09 - Wexford Half Marathon? (Very, very slowly?)
02/05/09 - RTE Road Race(or the final Leeds game of the season hmmmm...)
23/05/09 - Intel 10k
31/05/09 - Edinburgh Marathon

The ones in bold are the definates, the others are thoughts. Really hoping to do the Raheny 5. I'd best get training...

8 miles.

Missing out on running big time last two weeks, only my 4th run since the aware 10k due to suffering from fatigue and then eating something dodgy for lunch the other day.

Long run tomorrow.

13 weeks to go.

OK so I got up at about 8 yesterday morning and thought "great, quick light brekkie and I'll be out running before half nine" Then my mammy asked me to go into town so I was in town by ten shopping, instead of running. Ended up not running at all yesterday but did a good weights and core session.

Tonight I did a little over 14 miles and brought my watch with me for the first time since the marathon. Massive, massive confidence boost. Covered a regular route much quicker than I did before Dublin without even feeling like I'd put more effort in. I generally gauge runs by how long I'm out as oppossed to time so as I got over half way and realised I was WAY ahead of distance(I then measure when I get home like) I found myself slowing down...really had to push past that then and try to add some extra distance onto my run, I was nearly home and had nowhere else to go.

Anyway, think I'll be leaving the watch at home again next time, I'm really liking the kick I got out of my improvement. I suppose generally I'd probably improve by a few seconds and it's so long since I timed a run there has been a big improvement.

Happy and a bit stiff(I was stiff before my run, damn christmas shopping and present wrapping)

Less than 13 weeks to go.

Stick with it champ.
Great mileage with plenty of time left before cm.
I too hate all that split time, avr heart rate, talk in kilometres nonsense you get alot of on here.
I just go for a run.sometimes its 5miles.sometimes its 40+...whatever happens.
You'll smash connemara..and will enjoy it more than dublin.
Highly recommend the ultra.you wont look back after it and 26.2 miles will seem like a training sesion!
Push it!

Haha...my mother wouldn't be very impressed with you encouraging me, that 'push it' at the end nearly had me ringing up the connemarathon crowd to get them to change my entry. She hates me running marathons as its 'very long' when ever I bring up ultrarunning(and explain what it is every time) the poor women nearly dies.

Anyway covered about 16 miles on Friday...didn't do anything on Sat or Sun due to the January sales and football but did do a 10 mile cycle yesterday.

Went out this evening for a little over two hours so I suppose I covered about 15 -18 miles. Still not happy with getting half way through my run so quickly, need to work out some new routes for myself. Was mostly flat tonight, ran down to the war memorial park, did four laps then ran to ringsend via the canal and home again so it was mostly flat which is why I did the four laps of the park to get in some of those lovely hills.

82 days to go

9 miles or so tomorrow hopefully.

I cycle to and from work every day which is an 8-9 mile round trip. Took a while to get used to going out running half an hour after I got home from a 20 minute uphill cycle but with the times improvements I'm seeing now I'm obviously seeing some benefits from cycling now too.

*sigh* so on Tuesday I started feeling the beginings of a cold, went to bed at 7 wrapped up very warm and snug so I could try and 'sweat it out' overnight and to allow me to be all well and good for a new years day long run. New years eve I felt fine in work, took some cough medicine + lots of vitamin c rich foods...wednesday evening my voice began to go, thursday morning my alarm goes off for my run to begin, I wake up, my voice is gone. I had to battle with myself to stay in and not do my planned run. I probably would never have completed the long run anyway although I felt and still do feel absolutely fine bar the whole voicelessness thing, there's obvsiously something wrong with me so not wanting to make it worse stayed in, all day. Still bad today even though I went to work(and came home 'sick'). Weekends are such important training times because you can squeeze the longer sessions in, hopefully I start to improve now as I really need to(physically and mentally) go out for a run. Not been out since Monday now.

Least if it had been self inflicted from New Years celebrations it'd be remotely worth it.

Still to ill to risk running. Will do a weights session tonight and hopefully get out for a run in the morning, if you see some small girl running in the phoenix park tomorrow all wrapped up. That's probably me.

Done 3 runs this week now totalling 43 miles. Did 18 or so today and felt great at the end comfortable and strong and could definately have continued on. Gunna either try another longish 13 or so miler tomorrow or try two runs as I'm off work. Free next weekend so will be trying back to back long(ish) runs on sat evening/sun morn.
