DS Homebrew List

Hey guys, I have seen that there are a few threads scattered around the place on this, but nothing all in one place. I'm gonna post a bunch of links to NDS homebrew here, and if anyone replies with anything else I can just update my post to include it. Alot of good homebrew is scattered all around the net so it's difficult to find a good list (With descriptions).

I realise I am missing some here! Just let me know what you want added to the list and I will add it. If you experience problems with any of the items here let me know and I will update the post.

I am not endorsing any of the applications here, use them at your own risk. If your DS explodes and takes someones eye out because of one of the items there it's not my fault and you can't prove anything!

Homebrew Games for the DS
This section is for homebrew games.
  • Acromage - This is a card game kinda like Magic : The Gathering for the DS. It is apparently good, but when I tried it a few months ago I got some error. Did not have enough intrest to follow up on it.
  • Crocodingus in Cube Island - A 3D platform game.
  • DrugWarsDS - There seems to be a version of this on every system out there. Not played the DS one, but other versions were good for killing time.
  • DScent - Port of Decent to the DS, you probably need datafiles for this.
  • DSDoom - Doom ... that says it all. Once again, not loaded this on yet (Playing too many other things atm), but by all accounts it's good. You will also need data (wad) files for this, I believe there are open source ones available though (Google should tell you)
  • DS Omalone - A board game for your DS
  • Duke Nukem 3d - Another classic FPS ported to the DS
  • Element DS - Puzzle game like Alchemy (Mr E)
  • Every EnteNDS - A version of Every Extend (Mr E)
  • Lemmings DS - Contains over 300 levels from various different lemmings games. They appear tiny on the screen of course, but it is still very playable (Although sometimes you will accidently activate the wrong lemming). It's just like I remember it back on the amiga and I have invested quite alot of time into this. It's one of the perminant residents on my flash cart.
  • Lone Wolf DS - A port of the 'choose your own adventure' type books to the DS.
  • Mega ETk - A megaman clone
  • Open TTD DS - A transport tycoon deluxe port
  • Powder - Powder is a roguelike. This game was the main reason I bought a flashcart in the first place. It's a dungeon crawling game with randomly generated levels and it is brutally difficult. Ohhh, and when you die ... your dead. No reloads, you start from scratch again. You will constantly be finding new things when you play this.
  • Puzzle maniak - 27 puzzle games, great pick up and play game. Puzzles are randomly generated - Available from GBATemp (Thanks Mr E)
  • Quake DS - Both Quake and Quake 2 are available from this website. I have yet to try either one. You will need the datafiles from Quake/Quake 2 to play this, so you will either need to own a copy of the full game or have access to them some other way. (You are bound to know someone with a copy somewhere)
  • Retro Collection - A bunch of retro games (centipede and all that) ported to the DS
  • Rise of the Triad DS - Another port of an early first person shooter. This is at 0.7 but it is all working apart from the sound still being a bit glitchy and no network support yet.
  • StillAliveDS - This game is based on Portal. It's a platform/puzzle game and it is both fun and tricky.
  • Super Smash Bros Rumble - a DS version of super smash brothers. Still in reasonally early development, but playable. (Thanks brainiac)
  • Twin Isle - A Civilization / SimCity kind of game
  • Video Games Hero - A Guitar Hero type game for the DS. I have no intrest in the genre, so I can't really comment on this.
  • Warcraft Tower Defence - I'm sure everyone has played the flash version of this anyway.
  • World of Sand - A falling sand game
  • Xump DS - a lovely little puzzle game. It gets tricky quite quickly and controls might be a bit sensitive, but its very well done and pretty slick. (Mr E)

Homebrew Applications
This section of the post is for non-games for your DS. Please note that I have catagorised things like Pocket Physics here. I am leaving moonshell (A media player) out of this list, as it comes with most flashcarts anyway
  • Animanatee - Animation Program
  • Colors - A painting application
  • Comic Book DS - A comic book reader for your DS
  • DSLinux - Linux for your DS. Site is apparently down at the moment.
  • DS Organize - An orginizer for your DS. By all accounts a fantastic applications.
  • DS Reader - An app for reading e-books on your DS
  • EigenmatDS - An Algebra system for your DS
  • Flickbook - A little animation tool for the DS
  • Hobro - A fast Web browser
  • Pocket Physics - A physics simulator for the DS. You draw an object, hit start, and it interacts with other objects according to the laws of physics. For example a circle will roll like a ball, a box will fall (and slide down slopes) etc. This really is worth a try.
  • Pocket Pixie - A sprite animator
  • Scrabble Assistant DS - Finds anagrams, checks if words are valid etc. I can imagine using it at a game might be bad form though

Emulators
An emulator allows you to play games from other systems. An emulator is not in itself a game, you will require 'roms' to play on it. They are available all around the web, but it is an area of unsure legal footing. Some claim it's perfectly legal to download a rom of a game you already own, others claim it's all illegal. If you are downloading roms, do so at your own risk, I will not be providing links to any websites where roms are available so don't ask.
  • LameBoy - Gameboy / Gameboy Color emulator
  • NeoDS - Neo Geo Emulator
  • NesDS - Nintendo Entertainment System Emulator (Website down, google will find you a copy)
  • PicoDriveDS - Sega Genisis Emulator
  • ScummVM DS - ScummVM allows you to play the old lucas arts adventure games (Sam and Max etc), there is a full list on the site, you will need the oridginal datafiles for this. - Mr E adds : "ScummVM was recently updated to include the great Kyrandia games (graphic adventures that suffer from instant death syndrome!) but very good."
  • SnesDS - Super Nintendo Emulator
  • SNemul - Super Nintendo Emulator
  • SnezziDS - Yet ANOTHER Super Nintendo Emulator
  • StellaDS - Atari 2600 Emulator

Great great post, oeb. Well done.

I'll add:

Puzzlemaniak - 27 puzzle games in one package - all puzzles are randomly generated, and there are multiple skill levels. Great for a quick pick-up-and-play. Edit: He seems to be focussed on the iPhone version now, but you can grab the DS version from GBATemp (click downloads link at the top and search for it).

ScummVM was recently updated to include the great Kyrandia games (graphic adventures that suffer from instant death syndrome!) but very good.

Must give lemmings a good go. Wa bitterly disappointed with the PSN and PSP versions. The PSN version is entirely new and entirely awful levels while the PSP version is just lemmings 1, I was hoping for at least lemmings 2 and christmas lemmings to be there as well.

Aye, it's a fantastic little game alright, I still load it up when I don't know what else to play (That and powder).

I think tonight I will be giving the 1st person shooters a go, I fondly remember being up at my mates house playing Descent and feeling motion sick.

Here's one to add:

Super Smash Bros. Rumble: This is a homebrew version of Smash Bros. for the DS. It is in early enough sages. So far there have been 4 "demo's". A 5th demo is due soon which is going to add a LOT of extra suff. Right now there's about 4 playable characters and a few stages. A lot is planned for it including an Online mode .

A few more I've thought of...

Xump DS - a lovely little puzzle game. It gets tricky quite quickly and controls might be a bit sensitive, but its very well done and pretty slick.

Element DS - another nice puzzle game, a bit like Alchemy if you've played that.

Cheers! That's the thread up to date. Tonight I think I will give the doom and quake ports a try. See if I can find my quake and ultimate doom CDs now!

Another one I thought of:

Tales of Dagur - Good little RPG homebrew. Basically level up, and kil a few bosses at parts, short but fun.

Great thread

Anyone had success using the Hobro browser ?

I've tried but I never get beyond the "initialising Wi-Fi" screen.Wi-fi works fine for me on all games etc. Anyone got any ideas on what to do?
