Internal DVD Drive

Hey,

My laptop (internal) DVD drive has kicked the bucket. Does anyone know where I could pick up one cheap? Preferably DVD +- RW but that's not too important as I don't write too many DVD/CDs. The main thing I need is one that will play DVDs well in Linux.

Anyone got any advice?

What connection is the drive? PATA(long connection with a load of pins) or SATA (smaller connection).

@Ruu - Much cheaper one on dabs.

I'm not sure. I've never changed drives or anything in a laptop before (still need to figure out how to take it out ). Are komplett or dabs my best bet for one? I don't like to buy this kind of thing off eBay. You never know what kind of condition it's gonna be in.

Edit: Is there anything I should watch out for/avoid for Linux compatibility? As I said, I've no experience in this area

Flip the laptop upside down. There will be a small screw that will hold the dvd drive in place. It'll be at the very back of the dvd drive. If you still can't find it upload a pic of the bottom of your laptop and I'll show you.

If its an acer the procedure is a lot more complicated and involves removing the HDD.

Its not an acer is it?

Probably a marketing bod.
Broken drive outside warantee means the one repair job the average Joe could perform now requires the laptop to be returned for a service.

Have one myself, when I last replaced the drive I just yoinked it out - breaking the stupid plastic loop. That was the end of that nonsense.

I don't think so but I'm not sure but better safe than sorry

It's not an Acer but I can't see any screws directly beneath the DVD drive. I'll have a proper look tomorrow at how to remove it tomorrow. I'm a bit drunk to do it now

Just take a picture of the bottom of your laptop (I usually don't ask people to take a picture of their bottom ) and I'll highlight the screw for ya.

CD/DVD drives are handled at the hardware level, so no driver software is needed.

Therefore there should be no problem reading discs in Linux.
