Yes sleeping on the board walk for the week is acceptable but not necessary all you have to do is walk around during the day with a cup asking people,
"got a few euro for a hostel bud?"

Go to one of the countries that don't promote drinking like Dubai or something. You wouldn't be there for long but honestly there's not a whole lot to see. Four days on the ground would be overkill although they would be fairly packed days.

Worse thing about being off the booze is when you're out and all your mates on it.
